Mount Union scored five first half touchdowns on its way to a 56-7 whipping of John Carroll this afternoon in front of 1,225 fans at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights.
The Raiders' win, coupled with Otterbein's 25-22 loss at Marietta, gives the Purple & White sole possession of first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference. A win next week over the Cardinals would guarantee Mount Union an 18th straight OAC football championship and the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Kurt Rocco completed 26 of 32 passes for 359 yards and four touchdowns. Cecil Shorts had eight receptions for 88 yards and two scores, Vince Petruziello recorded six catches for 114 yards and one touchdown and A.J. Claycomb had three grabs for 56 yards and one score.
Terrance Morring rushed for 101 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns, while Tyler Harris had six carries for 23 yards and one score. Chaz Jordan also returned a fumble 43 yards for a touchdown.
The 8-0 Purple Raiders will host 7-1 Otterbein next Saturday, with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.

Mount Union is the top ranked team in the North Region in the first NCAA Division III Football Regional Rankings released in 2009. The Purple Raiders are followed by Otterbein, Wittenberg, Case Western Reserve, Mount St. Joseph, North Central (IL), Wabash, Wheaton (IL), Illinois Wesleyan and Trine in the North Region. You can see the NCAA's entire ranking of each region's top ten teams here.

Mount Union received 39 of a possible 40 first place votes to remain number one in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches' Poll. Otterbein remained 11th, while Capital fell to 25th and Ohio Northern received votes. You can see the entire poll here.
In addition, the Purple Raiders' JV squad defeated Ashland 47-28 last night to improve to 9-0 on the season. There has been a change to this weekend's schedule. The Monday evening contest at home with Waynesburg has been cancelled and a 2:00 game on Sunday afternoon at Washington & Jefferson has been added. Mount Union remained the number one team in the nation in this week's D3football.com Top 25, receiving 19 of a possible 25 first place votes. Otterbein moved up three spots to seventh, while Capital dropped two places to 16th and Ohio Northern moved up one spot to 19th. You can see the entire Top 25 here.

Mount Union scored four second quarter touchdowns to open up a 35-0 halftime lead in defeating Wilmington 56-0 this afternoon before 2,736 fans at Mount Union Stadium.
Kurt Rocco threw five touchdown passes and Neal Seaman added another, while Terrance Morring set a career high with 126 rushing yards.
Vince Petruziello (10 yards), Cecil Shorts (37 yards), Judd Harrold (23 yards), A.J. Claycomb (seven yards), Zac Lemmon (44 yards) and Kyle Miller (nine yards) had touchdown receptions, while Morring (one yard) and Lemmon (three yards) ran for scores.
The Purple Raiders' balanced offensive attack ran for 301 yards and passed for 301 for 602 total yards, while limiting the Quakers to a total of 114 yards.
Mount Union improves to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the OAC with the win, and will travel to John Carroll next Saturday with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. at Don Shula Stadium.

Mount Union scored twice in the first two minutes this afternoon and went on to defeat Heidelberg 44-14 before 1,249 fans at Frost-Kalnow Stadium in Tiffin.
Kurt Rocco threw for a career high 406 yards and four touchdowns, while Cecil Shorts had a career day as well, with 13 receptions for 297 yards and two scores.
Terrance Morring ran for a career high 108 yards and scored twice, while Vince Petruziello and Kyle Miller each caught touchdown passes.
The Purple Raiders racked up 536 yards of total offense, while the Student Princes had 333.
Mount Union improves to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the OAC with the win, and will host Wilmington next Saturday with kickoff at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.

Number one ranked Mount Union scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to come from behind and defeat 21st rated Capital 28-21 this afternoon before a standing room only crowd of 3,201 fans at Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus.
Scott Panchik scored on a five-yard run with 3:10 remaining to give the Raiders the lead and then the Purple & White held the Crusaders on downs with :48 left at the MTU 38.
The game winning drive was set up when James Herbert sacked Marty Assman near midfield, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Lambert Budzinski.
Mount Union tied the game when Kurt Rocco connected with Kyle Miller for a 36-yard touchdown with 8:17 to play. Capital had taken the lead at the 11:53 mark when Assman hit Dominic D'Andrea for a 23-yard touchdown.
The score was tied 14-14 at halftime after both teams scored in the final minute of the second stanza. First, Assman completed a 32-yard touchdown to Matt White with :54 remaining, then Panchik scored from a yard out with :22 left.
The Raiders opened the scoring at the 6:47 mark of the first period when Rocco hit Cecil Shorts for a 10-yard touchdown. Capital tied it with 8:09 remaining in the second on a one-yard Assman run .
Mount Union improves to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the OAC with the win, and will travel to Heidelberg next Saturday with kickoff at 1:30 p.m. at Frost-Kalnow Stadium in Tiffin.

Mount Union shutout Baldwin-Wallace 30-0 tonight before a standing room only crowd of 6,472 fans for Homecoming at Mount Union Stadium.
After a Jay Carpenter 32-yard first quarter field goal and two second stanza touchdowns, a Scott Panchik one-yard run and a Cecil Shorts seven-yard scamper, it was 16-0 at halftime.
Panchik's 13-yard score made it 23-0 through three before a Neal Seaman four-yard run capped the scoring early in the fourth period.
Panchik and Terrance Morring each ran for 100 yards in pacing the Raiders' 249-yard rushing attack, while the defense limited the Yellow Jackets to 47 yards on the ground. Overall, the Purple & White amassed 417 yards to 131 for B-W.
Mount Union improves to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the OAC with the win, and will travel to unbeaten Capital next Saturday with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus.
