Mount Union Head Coach Larry Kehres has been named the Ohio College Football Coach of the Year by his fellow collegiate coaches in the state. 

 

Kehres received nine first-place votes and 41 overall, in winning the award for the seventh time.  The award is sponsored by The Columbus Dispatch. 

 

Kehres has led the Purple Raiders to 10 Division III national championships and 19 Ohio Athletic Conference titles.  His career record of 275-21-3 has generated a .925 winning percentage.

Mount Union College and the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce invites the community to celebrate the football team’s 10th NCAA Division III National Championship with the “Raider Rally” Monday, January 26th at 6:00 p.m. at the Hoover-Price Campus Center in Alliance.

The event starts at 6:00 p.m. with an autograph session with the team in the East Room. 

Joe Tait, longtime voice of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Purple Raiders, will emcee the program that starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Kresge Dining Commons.

National Championship merchandise including a commemorative poster will be available for sale and the 2008 highlight film will be unveiled at the event.

The event is free and open to the public.

Mount Union Head Coach Larry Kehres was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year for a record ninth time Tuesday at the AFCA Convention in Nashville, TN.

Kehres led the Purple Raiders to a 15-0 record including a 31-26 victory over Wis-Whitewater in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the school's 10th National Championship.

A 1971 graduate of Mount Union College, Kehres served 11 years as an assistant coach at the school before taking over as head coach in 1986 and has compiled a 275-21-3 record over the last 23 seasons.

He has been named Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year six times, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year a record 13 times and in only its second year of existence, Liberty Mutual National Coach of the Year in 2008.

Mount Union senior quarterback Greg Micheli was honored with the NCAA Top VIII Award this week at the NCAA Convention.

The Top VIII award recognizes current student-athletes who have finished their collegiate careers for their athletics success, academic accomplishments, community service and leadership. Recipients will be honored at the NCAA Honors and Delegates Celebration January 15th at the NCAA Convention in Washington, D.C.

Micheli is the only NCAA Division III student-athlete to be honored and only the second in the history of the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Mount Union head football coach Larry Kehres has been named the Liberty Mutual Division III National Coach of the Year.


It is another honor in what has been another banner year for Kehres, who was also named American Football Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year for a record 13th time earlier this season.

A 1971 graduate of Mount Union College, Kehres is 275-21-3 (.924) in 23 seasons as head coach at his Alma mater.  Under his tenure, the Purple Raiders have claimed 19 Ohio Athletic Conference championships, including the last 17 in a row, and 10 NCAA Division III National Championships, including a win over Wis-Whitewater in this year’s Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.
