Mount Union received 30 of a possible 40 first place votes to remain number one in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches' Poll.  Capital remained fourth, while Otterbein and John Carroll each received votes.  You can see the entire poll here.

Mount Union received 21 of 25 first place votes to remain number one in this week's D3football.com Top 25 poll.  Capital held strong in the 4th spot, while Otterbein received votes.  You can see the entire Top 25 here.

Mount Union defeated Muskingum 51-13 before 2,350 fans this afternoon at McConagha Stadium in New Concord.

 

Greg Micheli completed 19 of 25 passes for 287 yards and four touchdowns.  Cecil Shorts caught five of the passes, covering 135 yards and two touchdowns.  Nate Kmic rushed 21 times for 181 yards and two scores.

 

The Purple Raiders accumulated 544 yards of total offense while limiting Muskingum to 208.  Mount Union next travels to Baldwin-Wallace with kickoff set for 2:00 p.m. next Saturday at Finnie Stadium in Berea.

Mount Union is the number one ranked team in the first AFCA Division III Coaches’ Poll of 2008.  The Purple Raiders received 29 of 40 first place votes to earn the top spot.  Mount Union has been ranked number one or number two in every season-opening AFCA poll dating back to the inaugural poll in 1999.

 

Wis-Whitewater received the other 11 first place votes and is ranked second, while Mary Hardin-Baylor, Capital and Wabash round out the top five.  Otterbein and Ohio Northern each received votes.

 

The AFCA Division III Coaches’ Poll is in its 10th season in 2008.  A Board of Coaches made up of 40 AFCA-member head coaches from NCAA Division III schools around the country votes each Sunday for the top 25 teams in Division III.  You can see the entire poll here.

Mount Union's junior varsity football team defeated Washington & Jefferson 31-16 this evening at Mount Union Stadium to improve to 4-0 on the season.  You can see the entire JV's schedule and results here.

Mount Union opened Ohio Athletic Conference play with a 44-7 win over Ohio Northern this evening before a standing room only crowd of 7,232 fans at Mount Union Stadium.

 

Greg Micheli was spectacular, completing 23 of 25 passes for 323 yards and 3 touchdowns.  He added 50 rushing yards on 6 carries.

 

The Raider defense was just as dominant, limiting Northern to 176 total yards, with nearly half of that coming in the fourth quarter.  The Polar Bears managed just 13 rushing yards in 25 attempts.  R.J. Meadows was held to 10 yards on seven carries.

 

Cecil Shorts caught seven passes for 108 yards, including a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to give Mount Union a 17-0 halftime advantage. He also scored on a 14-yard run in the third period.

 

A.J. Claycomb, Nate Kmic and Judd Lutz added touchdowns for the Purple & White, who accumulated 506 yards of total offense.

 

With the win, Mount Union improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play, and will travel to Muskingum next Saturday with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. at McConagha Stadium.

Mount Union's JV football team defeated John Carroll 7-3 and Ashland 28-23 over the weekend to improve to 3-0 on the season.  You can see the entire junior varsity squad's schedule and results here.

 

In addition, Mount Union received 21 of 25 first place votes to remain number one in this week's D3football.com Top 25 poll.  Capital climbed one spot to 5th, while Ohio Northern fell nine places to 25th.  You can see the entire Top 25 here.

Mount Union opened the 2008 season with a 33-3 win over visiting St. John Fisher this afternoon at Mount Union Stadium.

 

Nate Kmic ran for 231 yards and scored on runs of 7 and 15 yards in the first half to help propel the Raiders to a 13-0 first half lead.  Ryan Renbarger returned his second interception of the game 21 yards in the final minute of the half to make it a 20-0 halftime advantage.

 

Two Greg Micheli to Cecil Shorts third quarter touchdowns, from 35 and 36 yards, increased the lead to 33-0 after three before Chris Pierri booted a 27-yard field goal in the fourth to account for Fisher's only points.

 

Mount Union finished with 524 yards of total offense compared to the Cardinals' 249.  Micheli finished 14 of 19 for 224 yards and two scores, while Shorts led all receivers with six catches covering 147 yards.

 

Following a bye next weekend, the Purple & White will open Ohio Athletic Conference play on September 20th by welcoming Ohio Northern to Mount Union Stadium with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.

In addition, Mount Union has named its four captains for the 2008 season.  They are senior cornerback Daryl Ely, senior running back Nate Kmic, senior quarterback Greg Micheli and senior linebacker Chas Yoder.  Kickoff for the opener is Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
