Mount Union is ranked first in the North Region in the first Division III Football Regional Rankings released by the NCAA in 2008.  The Purple Raiders are followed by North Central (IL), Otterbein, Wabash, Trine, Case Western Reserve, Wheaton (IL), Franklin, Adrian and Rose-Hulman in the North Region.  You can see the NCAA's entire ranking of each region's top ten teams here.

Mount Union senior quarterback Greg Micheli has been selected from a nationwide pool of 164 semifinalists among all NCAA divisions and the NAIA, by The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) as one of 15 2008 National Scholar-Athlete winners, who will vie as the finalists for the Draddy Trophy, presented by HealthSouth.

 

As a finalist, Micheli wins an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and an invitation to the NFF Awards Banquet December 9th at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.  The NFF's National Scholar-Athlete program, launched in 1959, is recognized as the first and most prestigious initiative in the history of college sports to honor football players for their combined athletic ability, academic success and civic leadership.  You can read more about this award here.

The Mount Union College Office of Alumni and College Activities is planning a bus trip to Otterbein College for the football game on Saturday, November 8th.  The bus will leave at 10:45 a.m. from the Hoover-Price Campus Center parking lot with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. at Otterbein.  The cost is $50 and does not include your game ticket.  Deadline for reservations is Friday, October 31st and is on a first-come, first-served basis.  For more information, contact the Office of Alumni and College Activities at (330) 823-2030.

 

In addition, Mount Union received 39 of a possible 40 first place votes to remain number one in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches' Poll, while Otterbein moved up three spots to 15th.  You can see the entire poll here.

The Mount Union College SID's office has posted some game notes for Saturday's home game against John Carroll, which is Fall Visitation and Family Day on Mount Union's campus.  You can read them here.

 

In addition, Mount Union's junior varsity football team fell at Ashland 38-22 yesterday to finish the season 9-1.  You can see the entire JV's schedule and results here.

Mount Union jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and 49-0 advantage at the half in routing Wilmington 55-0 this afternoon at Williams Stadium in Wilmington.

 

Greg Micheli threw four touchdown passes and ran 60 yards for another, finishing 14 of 18 passing for 264 yards.

 

Cecil Shorts caught two touchdowns, while Vince Petruziello and Nate Kmic caught the others.  Kmic also ran for two scores and finished with 94 yards on 14 carries.

 

Ryan Wilk kicked two second half field goals to finish the scoring.  The Raiders finished with 550 yards of total offense while limiting the Quakers to just 53 total yards.

 

The Purple & White return home next Saturday to host John Carroll in the regular season home finale. Kickoff from Mount Union Stadium is set for 1:30 p.m.

Mount Union scored touchdowns on six of its first seven possessions in defeating Heidelberg 49-0 this afternoon before a Homecoming crowd of 4,022 at Mount Union Stadium.

 

Nate Kmic rushed for 134 yards on 19 carries and scored on runs of one, two and 12 yards, while Greg Micheli completed 15 of 19 passes for 193 yards and three scores, a one-yard toss to Judd Lutz, an 18-yard throw to Cecil Shorts and a 14-yard pass to Vince Petruziello.  Kurt Rocco hit Kyle Miller for a 10-yard touchdown late in the game to complete the scoring.

 

With the win, the Raiders improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play.  The Purple & White will travel to Wilmington next week to take on the Quakers at Williams Stadium in Wilmington.  Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

Number one ranked Mount Union defeated fourth rated Capital 49-7 today before 4,231 fans at Mount Union Stadium.

 

Greg Micheli threw three first half touchdown passes to Cecil Shorts and Nate Kmic scored one of his four touchdowns to open a 28-0 lead at halftime.

 

Micheli threw for 335 yards and Shorts caught nine passes for a career high 207 yards while Kmic ran for 168 yards to move into third place in career rushing yards in Division III history with 6,171.

 

The Raiders improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play while the Crusaders dropped their first game of the season.

 

The Purple & White will host Heidelberg next Saturday at Mount Union Stadium with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m.

Mount Union received 29 of a possible 40 first place votes to remain number one in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches' Poll.  Capital remained fourth, while Otterbein jumped into the top 25 at number 24.  You can see the entire poll here.

 

In addition, Mount Union's JV football team won two games recently to improve to a perfect 6-0 on the season.  The young Raiders defeated Baldwin-Wallace 32-20 on Sunday and Waynesburg 40-10 last night.  You can see the entire junior varsity's schedule and results here.

Mount Union thrashed Baldwin-Wallace 48-3 this afternoon in front of 7,107 fans at Finnie Stadium in Berea, piling up 648 yards of total offense in the process, while limiting the Yellow Jackets to just 172.

 

Nate Kmic ran for 218 and scored four times, while Greg Micheli missed on his first two pass attempts but then connected on 13 of his next 14 for 275 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Cecil Shorts caught six passes for a career high 158 yards and three scores.

 

The Purple Raiders improved to 4-0 with the win, and 3-0 in conference play. They will host unbeaten Capital next Saturday in a battle of two top five teams at Mount Union Stadium.  Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

Mount Union senior quarterback Greg Micheli has been named as one of 37 NCAA Division III semifinalists for the Draddy Trophy.  Micheli is also a candidate for the 2008 Scholar-Athlete Award as both awards are administered by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame.

The Draddy Trophy, presented by HealthSouth, has been referred to as "the academic Heisman."  One of college football's most sought after and competitive awards, the Draddy Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership.

The NFF Awards Committee will select and announce up to 15 finalists on October 29th.  Each finalist will be recognized as part of the 2008 National Scholar-Athlete Class, receiving an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.  The Draddy winner, who will receive a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship, will be announced at the NFF's Annual Awards Dinner on December 9th at the prestigious Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.  A total distribution of more than $300,000 in scholarships will be awarded that evening.

Last season, Mount Union center Eric Safran was a Draddy Trophy finalist and a member of the 2007 National Scholar-Athlete Class.

Mount Union head coach Larry Kehres is on the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year ballot and you can vote for him buy going here.

It is the only coach of the year award where fans can have a vote.

The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year is awarded to the college football coach who best demonstrates sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility, and excellence on and off the field.

In 2008, a Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year selection will be named in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, and Division III.  The award process will take place over the course of the college football season, winners will be chosen based on fan vote (20%), media vote (25%) and a College Football Hall of Fame selection committee (55%).  The top 25 coaches in each divisions fan voting that concludes on December 6th will be forwarded to the selection committee and media for a final vote.  

More than just a trophy, the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award provides each winning coach with $50,000 to donate to one or more charitable organizations of his choice and a $20,000 grant to donate to his school’s alumni association to enhance student scholarships and activities.
