Mount Union received 39 of the 40 first place votes to remain number one in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches' Poll.  Capital fell six spots to 20th following its loss to the Purple Raiders.  You can see the entire poll here.

 

In addition, the Sports Information Director's office at Mount Union College has posted some game notes for Saturday's Ohio Athletic Conference tilt between top ranked Mount Union and John Carroll at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights.  You can read them here.

Mount Union senior All-American center Eric Safran has earned the 2007 National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) National Scholar-Athlete Post Graduate Scholarship.  Only 15 such awards are distributed nationwide.

 

Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

 

Selected by the NFF Awards Committee, the 15 National Scholar-Athlete Award recipients will be honored at the 2007 NFF Annual Awards Dinner, celebrating the organization's 60th Anniversary, on December 4th at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.

Mount Union's junior varsity football team improved to 9-0 with a 60-28 win at Cincinnati Harmony today.  You can see the entire JV's schedule and results here.

Top ranked Mount Union clinched a share of its 16th straight Ohio Athletic Conference football championship with a 37-0 win over 12th rated Capital before 3,147 fans at Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus this afternoon.

 

Nate Kmic rushed for 114 yards on 36 carries and scored three times on runs of four, 20 and eight yards to lead the Raider offense.

 

Mount Union notched three touchdowns in the second quarter and added a safety on a blocked punt to open up a scoreless game.  Kmic rushed for two of the scores and Pierre Garcon caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Greg Micheli to give the Purple & White a 23-0 halftime lead.

 

Garcon finished with five catches covering 64 yards while Micheli completed 11 of 19 passes for 118 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

 

Kmic scored his final touchdown in the third period and Trevor Bruney added  a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth.

 

The Purple Raiders improved to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the conference with the win.  They travel to John Carroll next Saturday with kickoff from Don Shula Stadium set for 1:30 p.m.

Mount Union is ranked first in the North Region in the first Division III Football Regional Rankings released by the NCAA in 2007.  The Purple Raiders are followed by Wheaton (IL), Wabash, Case Western Reserve, Capital, Franklin, Mount St. Joseph, Wittenberg, Ohio Northern and Illinois Wesleyan in the North Region.  You can see the NCAA's entire ranking of each region's top ten teams here.

Number one ranked Mount Union shutout Baldwin-Wallace 35-0 this afternoon before a Homecoming crowd of 6,322 at Mount Union Stadium to improve to 7-0 on the season. 

 

In doing so the Purple Raiders pushed their string of not allowing a point to 14 quarters.  They have surrendered just one field goal over the last five games and no touchdowns in 20 quarters.

 

Justin Wray scored on a three-yard run on Mount Union's first drive marking the seventh time in seven games the Raiders have reached the endzone on its first possession this season.

 

Three second quarter touchdowns pushed the lead to 28-0 at halftime as Pierre Garcon scored on a 15-yard end around, Chad Reynolds caught a four-yard pass from Greg Micheli, and James Herbert returned an interception 50 yards for a score.  Garcon caught a four-yard pass from Micheli in the fourth period to finish the scoring.

 

Baldwin-Wallace got inside Mount Union's redzone four times and moved inside the 35 on seven occasions but were held scoreless by the Purple & White for the second consecutive year. The Yellow Jackets have managed just 10 points against the Raiders over the last five meetings.

 

Mount Union travels to Capital next week with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. from Bernlohr Stadium.

Mount Union's junior varsity football team won two more games recently.  The young Purple Raiders blanked Marietta 44-0 on the road yesterday and defeated Lake Erie 35-14 at home tonight to improve to 7-0 this year.  You can see the entire JV's schedule and results here.

Greg Micheli hit Bryson Davis for a 45-yard touchdown on the second offensive play from scrimmage as Mount Union rolled Wilmington 59-0 this afternoon before 3,132 fans at Mount Union Stadium.

 

The Raiders have scored a touchdown on the first possession of each game this season, and have scored in the game's first minute five times.

 

Micheli and Davis hooked up for another touchdown in the second quarter on a 30-yard play to make it 35-0 and by then the rout was on.

 

Micheli also connected with Justin Wray and Chad Reynolds for scores, finishing with four touchdown passes, while Terrance Morring, Nate Kmic, Trevor Bruney and Scott Panchik added touchdown runs.

 

The Purple & White finished with 682 total yards and limited the Quakers to 182.  Mount Union will host Baldwin-Wallace next Saturday for Homecoming in Alliance.  Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

Mount Union received 39 out of 40 first place votes to remain number one in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches' Poll.  Capital remained in the sixth spot while Ohio Northern dropped to 15th following its loss to Mount Union.  Baldwin-Wallace fell out of the Top 25 but received some votes, as did Wilmington.  Why a team with a 1-4 record would receive votes I have no answer for.  You can see the entire poll here.

Justin Wray scored a career high four touchdowns and totaled 193 all-purpose yards in leading top ranked Mount Union to a convincing 44-0 victory over 8th ranked Ohio Northern this afternoon before a record standing room only Dial-Roberson Stadium crowd of 5,177.

 

Wray put the Raiders on top three plays into the game on a 60-yard run and later added three one-yard scores.

 

It marked the fourth time in five games Mount Union has scored in the first minute of play and was the fifth time in five contests their first possession resulted in a touchdown.

 

Terrance Morring and Nate Kmic added scoring runs and the Purple & White recorded a safety when a bad punt snap sailed out the back of the endzone in the second quarter.

 

The Raiders totaled 300 rushing yards to Northern's minus nine and 526 total yards to 136 for the Polar Bears.

 

Mount Union gets back in action next Saturday when they host Wilmington.  Kickoff from Mount Union Stadium is set for 1:30 p.m.
