Mount Union's game with Heidelberg has been postponed tonight due to lightning and has been rescheduled for tomorrow afternoon at Mount Union Stadium with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m.

Mount Union received 36 of a possible 40 first place votes to remain number one in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches' Poll.  Capital moved up two spots to fourth and Ohio Northern jumped two places to ninth this week, while John Carroll received votes.  You can see the entire poll here.

The Mount Union College Sports Information Director's office has posted some game notes for this Saturday's OAC contest with Heidelberg.  You can read them here.

 

Also, Mount Union's JV football team improved to 5-0 on the season with a come from behind win over Washington & Jefferson tonight at Mount Union Stadium.  The Purple Raiders evened the game at 14 late in the second quarter and two second half touchdowns made the final 28-14.  You can see the full junior varsity schedule and results here.

Mount Union received 22 of 25 first place votes to remain number one in this week's D3football.com Top 25 poll.  Capital and Ohio Northern each moved up two spots so the Crusaders are third and the Polar Bears are 10th this week, meaning three of the top ten teams reside in the Ohio Athletic Conference.  You can see the entire Top 25 here.

Mount Union jumped out to a 42-0 first quarter lead and cruised to a 62-0 blanking of Muskingum in front of 1,894 fans in New Concord this afternoon.

 

The 42 points scored in one quarter is a Mount Union and Ohio Athletic Conference record, breaking the mark of 41 points set by Mount Union in a game at Defiance in 1996.

 

Mike Jorris and Greg Micheli combined to complete 17 of 21 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns.  Pierre Garcon had two touchdown grabs, while Justin Wray had one.  Nate Kmic, Micheli and Wray each scored rushing touchdowns.

 

For the second week in a row the special teams and defense also scored touchdowns as Chas Yoder returned a fumble for a score on a fumbled kickoff return and Chris Kappas scored on an interception return.

 

The Purple Raiders finished with 455 yards of total offense while limiting the Muskies to just 94.

 

Mount Union opens the home portion of its schedule next Saturday when it entertains Heidelberg on M-Club and Family Night.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.

The Mount Union Purple Raiders begin the 2006 season where they ended the 2005 campaign, atop the AFCA Division III Coaches’ Poll.  Mount Union received 35 of 40 first place votes to earn the top spot in the first poll of 2006.  The Purple Raiders have been ranked number one or number two in every season-opening AFCA poll dating back to the inaugural poll in 1999.

 

Wis-Whitewater received the other five first place votes and is ranked second, while Rowan, St. John's (MN) and Wesley round out the top five.  Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital is ranked sixth and Ohio Northern is 11th in the poll, which was released today, while John Carroll, Marietta and Baldwin-Wallace each received votes.

 

The AFCA Division III Coaches’ Poll is in its eighth season in 2006.  A Board of Coaches made up of 40 AFCA-member head coaches from NCAA Division III schools around the country votes each Sunday for the top 25 teams in Division III.  You can see the entire poll here.

Mount Union jumped out to a 27-0 first quarter lead in defeating Otterbein 71-14 this evening in front of 3,317 fans at Memorial Stadium in Westerville.

 

The Raiders led 27-0 despite running just four offensive plays from scrimmage as Matt Kostelnik scored twice ten seconds apart, first on a fumble recovery in the endzone after a botched punt attempt by the Cardinals and then on a 24-yard interception return.

 

Mike Jorris finished 12 of 21 passing for 317 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.  His favorite target was Pierre Garcon who had six catches for 152 yards and two scores.  Nate Kmic added 135 rushing yards and one touchdown, while Justin Wray recorded a combined 130 rushing / receiving yards and two scores, and Greg Micheli rushed for a touchdown.

 

The Purple & White finished with 663 yards of total offense, while limiting Otterbein to 224, including minus 16 yards rushing.  On the year Mount Union has yielded negative 25 yards rushing through two games.

 

The Raiders travel to Muskingum next Saturday with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. from McConagha Stadium in New Concord.

Mount Union began defense of its eighth national championship with a 64-7 victory over Averett in Danville, Virginia in the 2006 opener for each team today. 

 

Mike Jorris completed 16 of 18 passes for 276 yards and five touchdowns, Pierre Garcon had seven receptions for 192 yards and two scores and Nate Kmic carried the ball 17 times for 73 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Raiders.

 

The Purple & White jumped out to a 14-0 advantage after one quarter and increased that to 42-7 at the intermission before blanking the Cougars 22-0 in the second half.

 

Mount Union finished with 603 yards of total offense, while limiting Averett to just 158, including minus nine yards rushing.

 

Following a bye next week Mount Union opens Ohio Athletic Conference play on September 16th at Otterbein.  The Cardinals defeated Defiance 25-13 today and will also enter the contest 1-0.  Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
