Mount Union's junior varsity football team defeated Washington & Jefferson last night 28-6 to improve to 3-0 on the season. You can see the entire JV Football schedule and results here.

The Mount Union College SID's office has posted a game preview of this weekend's big Ohio Athletic Conference tilt between the Purple Raiders and the Capital Crusaders in Bexley. You can read it here.

Mount Union remains the number one team in Division III according to this week's D3football.com Top 25 poll. The Purple Raiders received 20 out of a possible 25 first place votes. Capital stayed fourth, while Baldwin-Wallace moved up two spots to 14th. The entire Top 25 is here.

Mount Union defeated Otterbein 41-10 this evening in Westerville to improve to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
The Purple Raiders scored two defensive touchdowns for the second week in row as Mike Gibbons grabbed a fumble out of the air and returned it for a score and Anthony Frate returned an intercepted pass for a touchdown for the second consecutive week. Rick Ciccone added two touchdowns while Jeff Strauch scored once and George Wilders booted a couple field goals in the win.
The Raiders totaled 366 yards on 59 plays (6.2 ypp) while limiting the Cardinals to 213 yards on 66 plays (3.2 ypp). Mount Union will travel back to the Columbus area next Saturday to take on unbeaten Capital. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. from Bernlohr Stadium.

Mount Union received 38 first place votes to remain number one in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches' Poll. Baldwin-Wallace moved up two spots to 6th, while Capital comes in again 12th and Otterbein received votes. You can see the entire poll here.

Mount Union scored two defensive touchdowns and returned a blocked punt for a score in beating John Carroll 55-3 tonight in the conference opener for both teams.
A record Mount Union Stadium crowd of 8,972 saw the Purple Raiders jump out to a 34-0 halftime advantage and increase that to 55-0 through three quarters.
Jesse Clum and Anthony Frate each returned interceptions for touchdowns, while Wade Kirk returned a blocked punt for a score. Zac Bruney connected on 18 of 22 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns as the Purple & White dominated in every facet of the game. With 2:27 remaining in the third quarter following the Raiders' score to make it 55-0, the Blue Streaks had a total of 45 yards on 35 plays.
Mount Union improved to 2-0 with the win and will travel to Otterbein to take on the Cardinals next Saturday evening in Westerville. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. from Memorial Stadium.

The AFCA Division III Coaches’ Poll is in its sixth season in 2004. A Board of Coaches made up of 40 AFCA-member head coaches from NCAA Division III schools around the country votes each Sunday for the top 25 teams in Division III. You can see the entire poll here.

Mount Union remained the number one team in the nation according to this week's D3football.com Top 25 poll. The Purple Raiders received 21 out of a possible 25 first place votes. Capital moved up three places to fourth this week, while Baldwin-Wallace jumped six spots to number 18 and John Carroll received votes. The entire Top 25 is here.

Kern, who started at cornerback on three Purple Raider National Championship teams ('00, '01, '02), is listed as the second-team free safety on Detroit's depth chart, and is also a key member of the Lions special teams unit.
He becomes the first Purple Raider to be activated on an NFL roster since quarterback Jim Ballard appeared with the Buffalo Bills in the mid-1990's.

The Purple Raiders jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, increased that to 24-0 by halftime and added scores in each of the final two quarters to finish off the shutout victory.
Zac Bruney completed 18 of 27 passes for 294 yards, including scoring strikes to Joe Bugara, Jason Cavell and Rick Ciccone. Jeff Strauch and Trevor Bruney added touchdown runs and George Wilders connected on a 36-yard field goal.
Ciccone caught five passes for 42 yards, while Bugara had two receptions for a game high 87 yards. Strauch rushed for a game high 101 yards on 11 carries.
Defensively, Mount Union limited Washington to just five yards rushing on 33 carries, and 165 total yards for the contest. The Purple Raiders' balanced attack produced 334 passing yards and 305 rushing yards for a 639 yard total. Mount Union averaged 8.2 yards per play, while limiting the Bears to a 2.4 average.
The Purple Raiders will have a bye this upcoming Saturday before opening conference play on September 18th against John Carroll with a rare night contest at Mount Union Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. The Blue Streaks were idle today and open their schedule next Saturday at Hope.
