June 2004 News

Posted by Ric 6/24/04

Mount Union will indeed play back-to-back evening games early this season as the week three match-up with Otterbein has officially been slated for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.  That follows the home opener against John Carroll the previous week that will also begin at 7:00 p.m.

The site for the Otterbein contest has not been announced yet as Memorial Stadium in Westerville is scheduled to be demolished this summer, with a new stadium to be built in its place.  Word is the site will probably be at Westerville North High School, but that has not been finalized yet.  You can see the entire 2004 Schedule and Match-up Fact Sheet by clicking on those links.

Start times have been announced for additional Purple Raider road games this fall, while one game's kickoff still remains in question.

Following the opener on September 4th against Washington (MO) in St. Louis, which has at 2:00 p.m. EST start, the home opener is set for two weeks later with a rare evening contest at Mount Union Stadium as John Carroll comes to town for a 7:00 p.m. tilt.

Otterbein is announcing that its week three match-up with the Purple Raiders will also kickoff at 7:00 p.m., although that has not officially been confirmed yet by Mount Union officials.  And since Memorial Stadium in Westerville is scheduled to be demolished this summer, with a new stadium built at the existing site, there is also a question as to where this game will be played.

The remaining seven contests are all scheduled to begin at the normal 1:30 p.m. kickoff, including a week seven match-up on October 23rd at the new Dial-Roberson Stadium vs. Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio.  You can see the entire 2004 Schedule and Match-up Fact Sheet by clicking on those links.

Mount Union is represented by two recruits in the 59th Annual Ohio All-Star Classic, the longest-running all-star football game in the country.  The game features most of the top graduating seniors in the state of Ohio.

Those participating in the game and listing Mount Union as their next destination are Trevor Bruney, a 5-11, 185-pound wide receiver out of Martins Ferry, and younger brother of returning starting quarterback Zac Bruney, and Brad Goldsberry, a 6-3, 185-pound wide receiver from Lima Shawnee.  Both will play for the South team.

This year's All-Star Classic will be played at Columbus Crew Stadium on Saturday, June 19 at 7:00 p.m., and is scheduled to be televised on the Ohio News Network.

We've been informed of another former Mount Union football player currently playing at the profession level.  Josh Liddell, who started at tight end on two Purple Raider national championship teams ('01-'02) and played on a third ('00),  is with the Manchester Wolves of ArenaFootball2.  You can visit their website here.
