As we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, a new system for predetermining
Division III championship semi-final sites has been created by the Division III Football
Committee. No longer will a REGION be able to host a semifinal contest more than two
years in a row.
I guess this means, for
example, if Mount Union were to host the semi-final contest two straight years and in the
third year, John Carroll, lets say, gets to the top, they would have no chance of hosting
the game that year. That doesn't seem fair, but hey, this is the NCAA!
It is the committee's directive to increase
the number of schools that have a chance to host NCAA championships. I guess this is
more important than putting any consideration into who might deserve to be the host team
more based on what happens on the playing field.
The committee also raised the
minimum adult ticket prices for first and second round playoff games to eight dollars and
discussed the possibility of realignments within Division III that would equalize the
number of teams in each region.
Mount Union College has announced the names of two more high school seniors that plan to
attend the Alliance college and play football this fall. We've added them to our 2001
Recruiting Class page. We will continually update this page as we receive
official releases from the college. You can see the list here.
Three players that have been announced by Mount Union College have been added to our 2001
Recruiting Class page. We will continually update this page as we receive
releases from the college. You can see the list here.
I've improved our Opponents History page to include the first and last
meeting, last game result, current streak, total points scored and won-loss-tied records
vs. every team Mount Union has played broken into three categories... Ohio Athletic
Conference, Non-Conference and Playoff and Championship games. It took a while but I
am now proud of this page. Please check it out here.
We've upload the 2001 Recruiting Class page with the first three official
recruits announced by Mount Union College. We will continually update this page as
we receive releases from the college. You can see the list here.
We've added the start times for Mount Union's 2001 schedule. Each game is slated to
begin at 1:30 p.m. with the exception of two evening road contests. Week three at John
Carroll has a 7:00 p.m. scheduled start and two weeks later the trip to Marietta will also
be an evening affair with a 6:00 p.m. scheduled start. You can see the entire Purple
Raider 2001 football schedule here.
We've also posted the entire 2001 OAC football
schedule. You can get to that here.
The Mount Union Purple Raider coaching staff will again be involved in
assisting in the development of area coaches and young athletes with a clinic for coaches
and a camp for young athletes soon.
TheRaider Football Coaching Clinic will be held April
7th for area coaches. You can read more about it here.
The7th
Annual Raider Football Development Summer Camp for boys in grades 6-12 will be
held June 11th-14th. You can find out more about it here.
We've begun work again on the past playoff season stories in the left menu.
Previously we had the 1985, '86, '90 and '92 playoff recaps finished and we have just
uploaded the recap from Mount Union's first national championship year of 1993... you can
go back in time to that great run here.
I became aware of a new rule in NCAA Division III playoff football today
that might affect Mount Union's chances of hosting a semi-final playoff game in 2001.
The rule change prohibits a college from hosting semi-final playoff games in
consecutive years. The Purple Raiders have not played a road playoff contest since
1996 and have hosted four straight semi-final games.
At this point we are not sure
if the rule has been grand-fathered, in other words, takes into account what has happened
in the past. If it does, the Purple Raiders would have no chance of hosting a
semi-final game in 2001 because they hosted Widener in that game last season. If the
rule does not look back to what has happened in the past, then the Raiders could possibly
host if they qualify for the game and are the higher seed.
You can see a list of the
all-division college football rule changes here.
I've added the game recap Dick Ross did for what was without a doubt the
greatest football game I have ever seen... the 1999 meeting between Mount Union and John
Carroll that took three overtimes to decide. Aptly titled, "The
Game of the Millennium" you can go back in history to that thrilling
day by clicking here,
or by going to our Memories Section.
Thanks to Dick
Ross for again helping us go back into Mount Union football history
with another game program. This one takes us to the season opener of the 1947
season. Mount Union hosted Kent State at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The
Purple Raiders fell to the Golden Flashes that day, 13-6, in front of 13,000 fans.

As soon as I start getting official word of football recruits I will start a list similar
to what we did last year. This should probably happen in the next few weeks. I
have heard of a number of terrific high school football players that have said they intend
to enroll at Mount Union, but I'd prefer to wait for official word from the school before
posting anything here. I will say that it sounds like this is turning out to be
another top notch class. On the heals of last years great class, the future looks
bright for the Purple Raiders to continue to be a force among DIII football
programs.
Thanks to Dick
Ross for sending me this picture of the program sold at the 1949
contest between Mount Union College and the University of Akron. The Purple Raiders
finished 3-6 that year, but one of its victories was on this day at the Rubber Bowl, 23-14
over the Zips. Click on the picture to see a larger version.
I've added pictures to our Stagg Bowl stories from the 1996 and 1993 games. Thanks
to Bill Gough
for the game photographs. You can see them under the Stagg Bowl
heading in the left menu. I've also started preparing the site for the 2001
season with the Mount Union and the entire OAC schedule. You can find those in the
left menu under 2001 Season.
