The American Football Coaches Association has named Mount Union Head Football Coach Larry Kehres as the NCAA Division III AFCA National Coach of the Year.  This is a record fifth time Kehres has won coach of the year honors.  He has earned the award in each of Mount Union’s national championship seasons of 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2000.  Joe Paterno (Penn State) and Bob Reade (Augustana) are the only four-time winners.

Also named as coaches of the year at the AFCA 2001 convention were Oklahoma's Bob Stoopes (Division 1-A), Georgia Southern’s Paul Johnson (Division I-AA) and  Bloomsburg’s Danny Hale (Division II).

All four winners were honored Tuesday evening at the AFCA Coach of the Year banquet at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Atlanta.   You can read the entire story here.

Be sure to stop by the Mount Union College Bookstore to see all the national championship merchandise they have to offer.  If you are not in the Alliance area and are unable to visit the store personally, you can see some of the shirts, hats, banners, etc... here.   There is also an order form to help you shop online.

Mount Union's 2001 Football Schedule has been finalized.  The Purple Raiders will open the season on September 1st at Mount Union Stadium against Allegheny, followed by an off week, before opening OAC play against Otterbein.  The schedule is basically the same as last seasons with just the home and away sites altered.   Although the times have not been announced yet, most starts will be at the usual 1:30 p.m. kickoff.  You can check out the entire 2001 slate here.
