One week till the 2001 opener and it's time to get your thoughts in our MTU Opinion Poll.  The new question is a  simple one:  "Purple Raiders vs. Gators in the opener... your thoughts?"

Our last poll tells us most of you think John Carroll will be Mount Union's biggest challenger in the OAC this season.  The Blue Streaks received 57% of the vote, followed by the Wilmington Quakers (16%), the Ohio Northern Polar Bears (13%), the Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets (6%) and the Otterbein Cardinals (5%).  No one else received more than one percent of the vote.

Thus far most people voting in our August MTU Opinion Poll think it will be John Carroll that will give Mount Union its biggest conference challenge this season.   We'll leave this poll up the rest of the week and then change it this weekend to something pertaining to the season opener vs. Allegheny.

The counting has been done, everything has been tallied, and the final results are in.   The addition to the covered stands at Mount Union Stadium is pretty much finished and the final word is... 5,658 seats.  That's the new official seating capacity at Mount Union Stadium.  And of course we all know you can probably double that number with standing room around the fences.  The new and improved stadium will get its first use tomorrow night during the Pigskin Preview.  The intersquad scrimmage begins at the stadium at 7:00 p.m.

Mount Union has scheduled a home and home football series with Wisconsin Whitewater to open each of the next two seasons.  The Purple Raiders will travel to Whitewater in 2002, with the Warhawks visiting Alliance in 2003.  You can see the next four tentative MTU football schedules in our Future Schedules section here.

Sports Illustrated has tabbed Mount Union as the team to beat in 2001.  The magazine picks the Purple Raiders as the number one team in Division III football in its annual college football preview issue.  Rounding out the top ten accourding to SI are Hardin-Simmons second, followed by Washington & Jefferson, Pacific Lutheran, Western Maryland, Trinity (TX), St. John's (MN), Widener, Bridgewater (VA) and Rowan.

I got back into town late last night after spending last week away on a family vacation.  As you probably know by now, the OAC Football Media Day was held last Tuesday, and as expected Mount Union was voted as most likely to repeat as football conference champions in both the coaches and media polls.  You can see the results here.

The annual Mount Union College Pigskin Preview will be Saturday, August 18th, with a picnic at 5:30 p.m. and an intersquad scrimmage at 7:00 p.m.  All season ticket holders, football and cheerleader parents, Century Raiders and all interested fans are invited to attend.  Head Coach Larry Kehres and several players will make a few remarks before the scrimmage in the stadium.

The Purple Raiders will also scrimmage Washington & Jefferson on Thursday, August 23rd at 7:00 p.m. in Washington (PA).  If you are thinking of attending this scrimmage it is advised that you call Mount Union College that day to make sure there have not been any changes.

Despite what was reported in February, I have learned today that the playoff format to determine semi-final host sites in NCAA Division III football will not change this year. The higher seeded team will host the semi-final matchup regardless of whether that school hosted any previous semi-final matchups.  The number one factor that will determine the host team is a seeding system based on what the teams did on the football field.  It was previously reported that a region would not be able to host a semi-final contest more than two years in a row.

I have added the 2001 Coaching Staff page to the site today.  You can see it here.  I have also updated all the Purple Raider football records through the 2000 season.  You can see get to those here.

Our July MTU Opinion Poll was a landslide.  Almost half  the votes, 45 percent, favored last year's last-second Stagg Bowl win over St. John's as being the favorite, followed by the 1998 victory over Rowan (21%) and the 1996 victory over Rowan (20%).  Mount Union's first Stagg Bowl win in 1993 grabbed 11 percent of the vote, followed by the 1996 win over Lycoming (3%).

As we are now exactly one month away from the season opener, our August question asks, "Which Ohio Athletic Conference team presents the biggest challange for Mount Union in 2001?"  You can vote now.
