October 2000 News

The latest Division III Top 25 Coaches Football Poll has been released.  With the loss of St. John's this past weekend, Mount Union picked up another first place vote and received 45 of the 46 first place votes among coaches in the poll.  If the way the coaches vote is any indication of Ohio Northern's shot at the playoffs, it doesn't look good for them because they still have not cracked back into the Top 25.  You can see the entire poll here.

The Purple Raiders improved to 7-0 in the OAC, 8-0 overall, with a win over Muskingum at Mount Union Stadium this afternoon.  Mount Union led 41-7 at halftime and cruised in the second half, playing a lot of personnel, for the victory.  Look for our game recap and pictures soon.

The tailgate party for this weekends game against Capital will start around 4:30 or 5:00 p.m.  We're not sure of the exact area yet so look for the Mount Union flags and the faithful gathering.  Potluck as always, so bring a friend and an appetite!

After hearing from a number of people about road construction problems with the directions forwarded to me by Capital University, I've changed the directions slightly to get to Whitehall-Yearling High School and this weekends game vs. Capital.  Directions from Alliance to the stadium are as follows:

Take Rt.-62 west to I-77 south to Rt.-30 west to I-71 south to I-270 east.  Take the Whitehall/Main St. exit and merge with traffic heading west.  After several blocks, turn right onto Yearling Rd.  Whitehall-Yearling High School will be on your left.  Turn left into the first drive way and park behind the school.

I've added a number of pictures taken by Bill Gough from the sidelines Saturday to our Mount Union - Wilmington game story.  You can see them in the Headlines section, or by clicking here.

When you have friends in high places, you get photos such as this!  Rumor has it, my friend, who would probably prefer to remain nameless, snapped this picture of  Moore, Pugh and Illaqua as they were coming off the field preparing for this weekends game against Wilmington.  No wonder these guys are good!  No shoulder pads or helmets!

Jackie Rychel has let me know tailgating will start between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. this Saturday morning before the game.  Look for the tent near the new bathroom facilities in the parking lot to the west of the covered stands.  Potluck as usual and bring your friends!

Mount Union  looked very impressive today in notching it's fifth victory of the season with a 40-point drubbing of Marietta.   Two individual milestones also occurred...

  • Larry Kehres now holds the OAC record for career wins, passing Lee Tressel (B-W, 1958-80).  Kehres, in his 15th season as head coach of the Purple Raiders, has an overall record of 155-17-3.   (.885%)

  • Chuck Moore, with four touchdowns on the afternoon, is now the Mount Union all-time scoring leader with 288 points.  The record had been held by Ken Edelman (1987-90), with 274 points.

Our recap of today's game, by Dick Ross, will be posted soon.
