June 2000 News

As were our thoughts when we first reported the story, ex-Michigan St. quarterback Dan Larlham has opted to transfer to Baldwin-Wallace, where he will have a better shot at playing right away.   With the quarterback depth chart what it is at Mount Union, with two quality QB's already on the roster in Gary Smeck and Rob Adamson, the time frame of Larlham seeing the field at Mount Union was a little more cloudy.

I spoke with Alliance High School graduate Matt Sotcan today.  Matt was a stellar athlete at AHS and just one of five freshman on the Army team at West Point last season to dress and make the traveling squad.  He was the third string quarterback for the Cadets a year ago, but has decided to forgo a military career and has opted to transfer to Mount Union College.   Sotcan is 6'1, 185, has three years of NCAA athletic eligibility remaining and will join Monty's defense as a defensive back.  Look for him in a Purple Raider uniform this fall.

Two high school football players from Stark County have announced today they will be attending Mount Union College.   Brad Banfield from Jackson High School and Michael Christopher from Lake High School have both made that commitment.  You can read about them and see the full list of high school graduates that have announced they'll be attending Mount Union in the fall to play football in our 2000 Raider Recruits page.

We've added nine names to our list of young men that have officially announced their intentions of continuing their academic and football careers at Mount Union College this fall.  Added to the list are a number of lineman with good size.  All of the players mentioned have received numerous awards for outstanding play for their respective high schools.  The full list of players we have now stands at 20 and you can read it here.

There's a story in the sports section of today's Akron Beacon Journal about ex-Walsh Jesuit High School and Michigan State second string quarterback Dan Larlham.  It seems Larlham has asked the school for and received an athletic release and intends to transfer to either Mount Union or Baldwin-Wallace.  Larlham was a Division III First-Team All-State selection as a senior for Walsh Jesuit in 1998, throwing for 1800 yards and rushing for nearly 1300.  He was redshirted last season, which means he still has four years of NCAA athletic eligibility remaining.

If he truly wants to play immediately, B-W may be a better fit with Gary Smeck and Rob Adamson already at Mount Union, although there have been a number of kids from Walsh Jesuit play football at Mount Union, so the pipeline is there so to speak.  One thing is for certain, this kid is good!  We'll see how this one plays out.  Thanks to Mark and Dick for the heads-up on this one.

I've added a new page in the Memories section today, titled 1999 in Pictures.  See some nice shots taken from the Mount Union Stadium sidelines by Bill Gough.  Lets go back to Saturday, November 27, 1999, when the Purple Raiders welcomed the Augustana Vikings for a playoff contest.  Great pictures Bill !

There has been a slight adjustment to Mount Union's 2000 football schedule.  The October 21st game at Capital, which was originally scheduled for an afternoon start, has been changed to a Saturday evening game.  Remember, the contest will be played at Whitehall-Yearling High School and is now slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

This means Mount Union will make two trips to Columbus this year for Saturday evening games, as the Otterbein match-up on September 16th has a 6:30 p.m. start time.  You can see the entire 2000 schedule here.
