As we are now six weeks from the start of the 2000 season, things are starting to happen.  Practice begins the first week of August and D3football.com has posted their Preseason Team of the Year.  It includes three Purple Raiders, which is the most from any school.  You can read the full team here.

My friends over at D3football.com have posted a number of 2000 season previews, including one for Mount Union and a number of other teams, such as Ohio Northern, Pacific Lutheran, Wooster, Wis-La Crosse and many more.  You can get to the full list here.

This weekend marks seven weeks before the season opener against Allegheny.  Things will start picking up for the football team as they begin practices for the season soon.

We will have a few links I know you have been waiting for done soon as well.  Mount Union College will hold it's annual media day at the end of this month and will release the pre-season roster, the full coaching staff and the JV schedule at that time.  I will then get those posted here ASAP for you.

It is great hearing from all those around the country that have emailed with positive things to say about the site.  It is really for you that this site was born!

According to Street & Smith's 2000 College Football Preview, Mount Union led all Division III football teams in average attendance per game in 1999. These numbers are for the regular season only, which is impressive, because you know the three post season home games only increased the average.  The top ten schools are listed below:

Team G Avg. Total
Mount Union 5 5,743 28,717
St. John's (MN) 5 5,615 28,075
Emory & Henry 5 5,418 27,090
Mississippi College 6 5,010 30,058
Baldwin-Wallace 4 4,433 17,730
Rowan 4 4,175 16,700
Williams 4 4,131 16,523
Ithaca 5 4,092 20,458
Trinity (CT) 4 4,007 16,028
Washington & Jefferson 5 3,860 19,300

Total attendance in all of Division III was at it's highest since 1992, with just under two million fans witnessing regular season D3 football in 1999.

"Expect Mount Union to reclaim throne in second year of expanded playoffs."

That's the way Street & Smith sees it in Division III in their 2000 College Football Preview.  The Purple Raiders head their Top 25 with the OAC's Ohio Northern eighth and season opener opponent Allegheny 11th.  Defending champion Pacific Lutheran is second with Rowan slotted third, by their estimation.  They also include the OAC's Baldwin-Wallace, John Carroll and Wilmington as "others to watch."

That means of the top 38 teams in Division III they mention, Mount Union has five on it's regular season schedule.

The Raiders' Gary Smeck, Adam Marino and Jason Gerber have also been included on their pre-season All-American team.  Mount Union is the only school with more than one representative on that team.  The picture of Smeck above is also included in the magazine.

I've added a link that recaps the 1990 playoff season.  This was the only time in eleven playoff tries thus far that the Purple Raiders did not get by the first round, although it was another game most would say in attendance that again turnovers played a big part as Mount Union pretty much won every statistical category except the one that matters most, on the score board.  1990 was also the third time in three playoff tries that the Raiders were eliminated by the eventual national champions.
