Division III prior to 1973

Prior to 1973, there was no title game to decide a national champion in Division III Collage Football.   From 1969 to 1972, there were two regional champions decided... the Knute Rockne Bowl in the east and the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl in the west.  Here are the results of the regional title games those four years:

 

Knute Rockne Bowl

• 1972 - Bridgeport defeated Slippery Rock 27-22 in Atlantic City (NJ)

• 1971 - Bridgeport defeated Hampden-Sydney 17-12 in Atlantic City (NJ)

• 1970 - Montclair State defeated Hampden-Sydney 7-6 in Atlantic City (NJ)

• 1969 - Randolph-Macon defeated Bridgeport 47-28 in Bridgeport (CT)

 

Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl

• 1972 - Heidelberg defeated Fort Valley State 28-16 in Phenix City (AL)

• 1971 -*Samford defeated Ohio Wesleyan 20-10 in Phenix City (AL)

• 1970 - Capital defeated Luther 34-21 in Columbus (OH)

• 1969 - Wittenberg defeated William Jewell 27-21 in Springfield (OH)

*Samford's participation in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl vacated
  by the NCAA Committee on Infractions.
