Raiders blank Quakers in Ohio Athletic Conference tilt The top ranked Purple Raiders scored four second quarter touchdowns in a 10-offensive play span while the defensive posted five interceptions in a 56-0 drubbing of visiting Wilmington Saturday before 2,736 fans at Mount Union Stadium. The Raiders led 7-0 after its first possession when Kurt Rocco hit Vince Petruziello for a 10-yard touchdown. The drive covered 36 yards in three plays and was set up by a 54-yard kickoff return by Chaz Jordan to begin the game. Mount Union's next two drives would end on downs in Wilmington territory so the first quarter ended 7-0. The onslaught began when Roger Stewart intercepted Adam Reynolds on the first play of the second stanza. The Purple & White went 64 yards in just three plays to double its lead when Rocco hit Cecil Shorts for a 37-yard score. The senior wideout led all receivers with four receptions for 76 yards. The Raiders would add three more touchdowns in their next nine plays and before the Quakers knew what hit them it was 35-0 with 4:47 still to play in the first half. It took Mount Union four plays to make it 21-0 following Matt Williamson's first career interception at Wilmington's 17. Terrance Morring took it in from a yard out. The senior running back finished with acareer high 126 rushing yards on 18 carries, averaging seven yards per tote. Wilmington found itself punting out of its own endzone on its next possession, and Petruziello's 26-yard return to the Quakers' 23 gave Rocco and the offense great field position once again. It took one play to make it 28-0 when the senior quarterback hit Judd Harold for a score. Rocco threw for 275 yards and a career high five touchdowns in the contest. Alex Farrara then intercepted Billy Blackburn on Wilmington's next possession, returning it 26 yards to the Quaker 23. Four plays later Neal Seaman found A.J. Claycomb from seven-yards out, making it 35-0. Mount Union actually had a chance to add to that score but Seaman was intercepted by Marcus Stewart inside the Quaker 10 in the final minute of the half. At the break the Purple & White led in total yards 315 to 45. Rocco threw two more touchdown passes in the third period. The first covered 44-yards with most coming on a great run by Zac Lemmon, capping a 56-yard drive in three plays that was set up with Farrara's second interception of Blackburn. Rocco then hit Kyle Miller for a seven-yard score that ended a 47-yard march in seven plays, to make it 49-0 through three. Again it could have been worse if not for Rocco's interception in the endzone by Stewert, his second pick of the day. That miscue ended Mount Union's longest drive of the game, an 89-yard jaunt that went from its own one to the Wilmington 10. The final score came midway through the fourth when Evan Lamolinara recorded his first career interception and returned it 29 yards to the Quaker three. Lemmon scored on the next play to make it 56-0 with 8:28 left to go. For the game, the Raiders' balanced attack accounted for 602 yards of total offense, including 301 passing and 301 rushing, while Wilmington managed 114 yards, 72 through the air and 42 on the ground. Defensively, freshman Nick Driskill led the way with eight tackles, while Sam Kershaw and Judd Lutz each had seven. The only sack in the game was posted by Williamson, his fourth of the season. Forgive Wilmington if they never want to play Mount Union again. They are 0-12 lifetime against the Purple Raiders and have been shutout seven times. The average final score when these two teams play is 54.5 to 2.9. Mount Union improved to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in conference play with the win. Next up is a trip to John Carroll next Saturday. The Blue Streaks will enter the contest 3-4 overall, 3-3 in the OAC, after losing to Ohio Northern this week. Kickoff from Don Shula Stadium is set for 1:30 p.m. Last year the Purple Raiders defeated John Carroll 41-7 in Alliance, and have won 19 straight in the series dating back to a tie in 1991. The Blue Streaks last victory came in 1989. Overall, the Purple Raiders own a 22-2-2 lead in the series which began in 1931.
