Late turnovers end
Raiders run for 11th national
title
Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated Mount Union 38-28 in the 37th Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl to claim the University's
second football national championship. The game had been delayed five
hours to make the field playable after 18 inches of snow blanketed the Salem,
Virginia area in the 21 hours leading up to kickoff.
The 2009 Division III title game was a rematch of the last four Stagg
Bowls, three of which were won by the Purple Raiders, 35-28 in 2005, 35-16 in 2006
and 31-26 last year. The Warhawks claimed the title with a 31-21 win
in 2007.
Whitewater sophomore running back Levell Coppage was named the games Most
Outstanding Player after rushing for a 111 yards and scoring three times,
including the game winning touchdown on a 31-yard run with 1:17 remaining
and the scored notted at 28.
Mount Union had rallied from a 28-14 halftime deficit to tie the game with
12:08 left on a five-yard run by Kurt Rocco. The game tying drive was
set up when Alex Ferrara intercepted Whitewater quarterback Jeff Donovan at
the Warhawk 31.
But the Raiders lost three fumbles in the final 10 minutes to end any hopes
of a national championship. On the next possession, Wes Ryder fumbled after gaining eight
yards on a pass from Rocco on the Mount Union 39. The defense, which
played extremely well in the second half after having trouble getting off
the field in the first,
forced a punt after allowing only four yards.
Then Terrance Morring lost the ball after picking up a first down at the
Whitewater 35 with 6:23 left in what looked like a drive that might give the
Raiders their first lead. The Warhawks were forced to punt again
without picking up a first down.
The final turnover came when Rocco was hit from behind on fourth and eight
from Mount Union's 30 with :46 left, resulting in a Jeff Schebler 44-yard
field goal to ice the game.
Mount Union's defense completely turned the game around at halftime after
Whitewater's offense dominated the first two quarters. The Warhawks
converted all nine third down conversions in the first half, and scored the
first four times they had the ball.
Coppage opened the scoring on a one-yard run at the 8:38 mark of the first
period, capping a 10-play, 85-yard drive. Whitewater made it 14-0 with
13:32 left in the second when Donovan hit Cory Robinson for a one-yard
touchdown, ending a 13-play, 78-yard march.
The Raiders came right back, moving 70 yards in just five plays to get on
the board when Rocco found Cecil Shorts on a 19-yard touchdown. But
the Warhawks reclaimed a two-score lead when Coppage scored
on another one-yard run, capping a 10-play, 65-yard drive midway through the
second stanza.
The Purple & White answered again by going 65 yards in seven plays, cutting the
lead back to seven when Ryder scored his first career touchdown on a two-yard
pass from Rocco at the 4:33 mark.
But Whitewater scored again, marching 65 yards in eight plays to grab a
28-14 lead when Aaron Rusch and Donovan connected on a 10-yard touchdown
with :52 left in the half.
The Warhawks gained 291 yards in the first half to Mount Union's 182.
Donovan was nearly perfect, completing 17 of 22 passes for 224 yards and two
scores.
It was simple, if the Purple & White were to have any chance of winning the
defense was going to have to find a way to slow down Donovan and
Whitewater's offense in the second half. And they did just that.
After the break, the Warhawks converted only one of nine third downs.
A complete reversal of the nine for nine conversion rate in the first half.
At the same time, Rocco had a hot hand leading the offense. He
connected with Shorts for a 19-yard touchdown with 9:59 left in the third to
cut Whitewater's lead to 28-21. That drive capped a five-play, 77-yard
march. But in the end, Mount Union could not overcome the three
turnovers in the game's final 10 minutes.
Rocco finished with 383 yards passing, completing 23 of 39 passes and three
touchdowns, along with one rushing score. Shorts caught 10 passes for
185 yards and two touchdowns, while Morring ran for 88 yards on 20 carries.
Donovan
finished 26 of 40 for 323 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
After his explosive first half, he completed nine of 18 passes for 99 yards,
no touchdowns and one interception in the second half.
Defensively, the Raiders were led by Sam Kershaw's 10 tackles, while Lambert
Budzinski, Ferrara, Ryan Renbarger and Roger Stewart each had eight.
Another key stat was that the Purple & White could not get to Donovan,
finishing with no quarterback sacks, while Whitewater got to Rocco five
times.
The group of seniors
that walked off the field for the last time posted a 58-2 record during their four-year careers at Mount Union,
including four Ohio Athletic Conference championships, four Stagg Bowl appearances and two national championships.
It is the first group of seniors that finished each season with a trip to
the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.
When you win so much it makes it all the more difficult to lose in your last
game. But this group of seniors will realize, in time, how good they
were from the 2006 through 2009 seasons while wearing the Purple, Black &
White of Mount Union College. Over that four-year period, no Division
III football team was better.
