Raiders dominate Presidents in all phases in first round playoff win
Mount Union scored touchdowns the first six
times it had the ball and went on to shutout Washington & Jefferson 55-0 Saturday in
the First Round of the NCAA Division III playoffs in Alliance.
In one of the most dominant
performances in Raider playoff history, the Purple & White led 41-0 at halftime after accumulating 400 yards of total
offense and holding the Presidents to just 18 yards and no first downs in
the first two quarters.
This against a team that has
made seven straight playoff appearances and by all accounts is one of the
most successful programs in all of Division III football.
Mount Union's defense completely
overmatched Washington &
Jefferson in the first half, holding it without a first down on eight possessions. It's
biggest play from scrimmage came on a seven-yard pass from Gino Rometo to
Craig Besong late in the second quarter.
Meanwhile, the Raiders averaged
10 yards per play on 40 first half snaps. They accumulated 187 rushing
yards, 213 passing yards and 18 first downs.
The onslaught began when Joe
Millings sacked Rometo on third and six on the initial series of the game.
It was the first of five MTU sacks, two each by Millings and
James Herbert and one by Chaz Jordan.
Vince Petruziello returned Joe Kelly's punt 31 yards to the W & J 28 and it took the Purple & White just
two plays to take the lead when Kurt Rocco found Cecil Shorts for a 25-yard
touchdown. Jay Carpenter's point after attempt hit the upright, making
it 6-0 just 2:17 into the contest.
Following another three and out
by the President's offense, Scott Panchik made it 13-0 with a four-yard run,
capping a six-play, 61-yard drive at the 8:58 mark of the first.
With 5:02 left in the first, it
was Terrance Morring's turn to find the endzone, as the senior scooted in
from 16 yards to increase the lead to 20-0. That score capped a
six-play, 71-yard drive.
Mount's fourth possession
was a quick one. One play, 55 yards, touchdown. Rocco found
Shorts to make it 27-0 with 3:04 still to go in the initial period.
The senior quarterback, starting
his first playoff game, completed 14 of 19 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns. Shorts had seven
of those receptions for 160 yards and both scores.
The Raiders added two more
touchdowns in the second stanza. Morring found the endzone for the
second time on a four-yard run, capping an eight-play, 61-yard drive with
14:07 left in the half. Panchik finished the first half onslaught with
a nine-yard run with 7:39 to go, ending an eight-play, 48-yard march.
Following intermission, Panchik
recorded his third touchdown on another nine-yard run on a 13-play, 84- yard
drive with 3:48 to go in the quarter. Panchik and Morring each ran for more than 100 yards,
combining for 225 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Playing with a complete
second-team unit in the fourth quarter, the Purple & White added one more
score when Zac Lemmon finished a nine-play, 71-yard drive with a four-yard
touchdown run with 8:55 remaining.
The only question that remained
was whether or not Washington & Jefferson would fail to score for the first
time in 216 games, dating back to a 24-0 loss to Lycoming in the
quarterfinal round of the 1990 NCAA Division III playoffs.
The Presidents drove to the Raider 29
early in the final period, and then to the 23 with five minutes to play, but
both times Rometo's pass attempts on fourth down fell incomplete, preserving
MTU's fourth shutout of the season and second in as many weeks. The
Purple & White defense has not surrendered a point in nine straight
quarters, dating back to a Otterbein touchdown at the 7:59 mark of the third
quarter in the 58-7 week nine win over the Cardinals.
Washington & Jefferson was held
to minus-nine yards in the first quarter, 27 in the second, 61 in the third
and 48 in the fourth for a total of 127 yards, 133 through the air and
minus-six on the ground. Mount Union had a very balanced attack, with
286 passing and 295 rushing for a grand total of 581 yards.
Defensively,
Herbert led the way with seven tackles, while Charles Dieuseul added six and
Millings, Roger Stewart and Nick Driskill each chipped in with five.
There were no turnovers by either team.
The Purple
Raiders will face Montclair State next Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.
The Red Hawks defeated Maine Maritime 38-22 Saturday to advance to the second
round.
It will be the first ever meeting between these two schools.
Mount Union enters the contest with an 11-0 record, while Montclair State is
10-1 and champions of the New Jersey Athletic
Conference. Kickoff is set for 12:00
p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
