Raiders hold Cardinals to zero net yards in second half in 42-point win Mount Union opened the 2009 season with a 52-10 victory over St. John Fisher in front of a standing room only crowd of 4,320 fans at Growney Stadium in Pittsford, New York. It was the Raiders first football game played in the state of New York in 36 years, and only the third ever. The opening day win was the Purple & White's 22nd consecutive to start the season, dating back to a 17-15 loss to Wooster in 1987. Overall, Larry Kehres is 23-1 on opening day. The game also marked the 300th in the illustrious coaching career of Kehres, whose record now stands at 276-21-3 Mount Union jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead on two Kurt Rocco touchdown passes, a 10-yard strike to tight end Kyle Miller less than three minutes into the contest, and a 44-yard swing pass to Cecil Shorts that the wide receiver turned into a 44-yard score by turning the corner and outracing the entire Cardinals' defense. Rocco, a senior, excelled in his first collegiate start at quarterback, completing 13 of 16 passes for 249 yards and three touchdowns. He connected again with Shorts on a 56-yard bomb midway through the third quarter that made it 42-10. Neal Seaman split time with Rocco and also played well in his first game at Mount Union, connecting on nine of 13 passes for 91 yards and a 30-yard touchdown to Shorts in the second quarter. Neither Rocco nor Seaman were intercepted. Seaman, a freshman from nearby Louisville High School, is the first quarterback to take a snap in his first game at Mount Union since Bill Borchert helped the Purple Raiders defeat Defiance 44-10 as a freshman in the 1994 season opener. Shorts picked up right where he left off in the 2008 Stagg Bowl, catching five passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore running back Zac Lemmon made it 28-3 on a three-yard run with 44 seconds left in the first half, but an answered 51-yard Hail Mary pass from Fisher quarterback Tim Bailey to receiver Ryan Francis gave the Cardinals their only touchdown of the game with :03 remaining in the second quarter. The Cardinals first score came on a Chad Monheim 19-yard field goal early in the second. The Raiders took a 28-10 lead into the locker room. Mount Union was annoyed so much by the Hail Mary connection just before the break, that it allowed zero net yards in the second half. St. John Fisher ran eight plays in the third quarter and 11 in the fourth, for no net yards. The Raiders put the the game away in the third stanza by scoring on its first two possessions, a one-yard run by running back Scott Panchik and the Rocco to Shorts 56-yard pass, to lead 42-10 after three periods. The Purple & White added 10 fourth quarter points on a 22-yard Jay Carpenter field goal and a two-yard Tyler Harris touchdown run. Eight Raiders combined to rush for 150 yards. Lemmon led the way with 38 yards on nine carries, while Panchik added 36 yards on 12 runs, Harris had 34 yards on eight attempts and Terrance Morring garnered 24 yards on six totes. Defensively, Mount Union was a good as advertised. 51 of Fisher's 134 total yards came on the Hail Mary play at the end of the half and another 30 came on a Flea Flicker play in the second quarter that resulted in the field goal. Subtract those two razzle dazzle plays and the Cardinals managed 53 yards on 50 plays, an average of slightly better than a yard a play. James Herbert led the team with eight tackles and two sacks, while Lambert Budzinski and Judd Lutz each added seven tackles. Joe Millings, Zac Saum and Cory Whaley also recorded sacks. Mount Union finished with 490 yards of total offense while St. John Fisher netted 134 in a very error-free game. Neither team turned the ball over and there were only five penalties called in the entire contest, two on the Raiders for 30 yards and three on the Cardinals also for 30 yards. The Purple & White will have a bye this Saturday before opening Ohio Athletic Conference play on September 19th at Ohio Northern. The Polar Bears opened their season with a 28-19 upset win over fourth ranked North Central (IL).
