Raiders clinch 18th straight OAC championship after plucking
Cardinals
Top ranked Mount Union scored six
first half touchdowns in jumping out to a 41-0 halftime lead on the way to a
58-7 thrashing of #15 Otterbein Saturday before 5,137 fans at Mount Union
Stadium.
With the win, the Raiders clinched
their 18th consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference football championship, and
their 21st overall. The win also gave the Raiders the conference's Automatic Qualifier
into the NCAA Division III playoffs, which begin on November 21st.
The Purple &
White dominated both offensively and defensively against the Cardinals,
scoring touchdowns on its first six possessions. By contrast,
Otterbein's first five drives ended in punts and the next four ended with a
turnover.
By the time the
Cardinals picked up its first first down, via penalty, Mount Union had
scored four times. The Cardinals' first quarter offensive numbers:
Three plays, eight yards, punt; three plays, zero yards, punt; three plays,
zero yards, punt, three plays, nine yards, punt.
The first 15
minutes were played on Otterbein's side of the field. Mount Union's
drives consisted of: seven plays, 51 yards; five plays, 32 yards; and four
plays, 20 yards, all resulting in touchdowns. It was 21-0 after one. Terrance Morring scored
on a three-yard run, Kurt Rocco hit Judd Harrold for a five-yard touchdown,
and Kyle Miller caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Rocco.
The Raiders'
fourth drive began at the start of the second stanza at the Cardinals' 39 and was over
when Scott Panchik took a handoff and raced 39 yards untouched for another
touchdown.
Nine seconds
into the second quarter it was 28-0 and each team had had the ball four
times. The Raider scorecard: 28 points, six first downs, 73 rushing
yards, 69 passing yards, 142 total yards.
Otterbein? Zero
points, zero first downs, eight rushing yards, 21 passing yards, 29 total
yards. And four punts that covered 62 yards, an average of 15.5 yards
per punt.
The game began
with Mount Union winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half.
Otterbein took the ball and the Raiders took the wind, a 20 mph force out of
the south. Because Otterbein could not move the ball, it punted four
times in the first quarter, into the wind, with the line of scrimmage at
it's 28, 20, six and 33. The punts sailed 23 yards, 12 yards, 21 yards
and six yards.
Following
Panchik's touchdown to begin the second quarter, Otterbein started at it's
40, it's best field position of the game. With the wind at their
backs, the Cardinals picked up their first first down on an interference
penalty. They then lost five yards over the next three plays and
punted again.
The Purple &
White made it 35-0 when Rocco found Miller for another touchdown hookup, this one
covering six yards. The offense remained perfect on the day, driving
80 yards in seven plays for the score.
Otterbein's last
four positions of the the half ended in turnovers, three of which were
interceptions, one by Ryan Renbarger, and two by Roger Stewart.
Stewart now leads the team with five picks on the year.
Mount Union
managed one more touchdown before intermission, a two-yard run by Panchik following an
eight-play, 59-yard drive. Jason Carpenter's extra point attempt
banged off the left upright, leaving the score 41-0 at halftime.
The two teams
traded touchdowns in the third quarter. Otterbein finally got on the
board after recovering a fumble on its seven-yard line. The Cardinals
drove 93 yards in nine plays and scored when Mike Dettwiler caught a
five-yard pass from Austin Schlosser.
The Raiders
responded by going 74 yards in eight plays to make it 48-7 when Rocco
connected with A.J. Claycomb for a 21-yard touchdown.
Mount Union
scored the only 10 points of the final period. Carpenter booted a
22-yard field goal on the second play of the quarter, capping a six-play,
53-yard drive, and then Zac Lemmon went right up the middle untouched 63
yards for the longest run of his career.
Rocco completed
16 of 24 passes for 205 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
Cecil Shorts led all receivers with six catches for 95 yards, while Vince
Petruziello added four receptions covering 52.
The Raiders were
nine yards away from seeing three running backs each go over the 100-yard
mark. Lemmon led all rushers with 118 yards on six carries, while
Panchik picked up 108 yards on 11 totes and Terrance Morring managed 91
yards 17 rushes.
The Purple & White rushed for 320 yards and passed for 216 in outgaining
Otterbein in total yards, 536 to 273. The Cardinals, who came into the game
leading the OAC in rushing, averaging 253 yards a game, netted just 52 yards
on the ground.
Defensively,
Judd Lutz led the way with eight tackles, while Chaz Jordan and Stewart each
recorded five for Mount Union.
The Purple &
White improved to 9-0 overall and 8-0 in the conference, while the Cardinals fell
to 7-2 and 6-2. Next week,
the Raiders will try to complete a perfect regular season when they host Marietta
in the regular season finale. A win over the Pioneers would give the
Purple & White a prefect 10-0 regular season and likely a home playoff game
on November 21st. Kickoff will be at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
