Mount Union's
defense kept the top ranked Purple Raiders in the game early on Saturday
against #7 Ohio Northern, allowing its
offense to pull away in the second half for a 30-10 victory before a standing room only crowd of 4,638 at
Dial-Roberson Stadium in Ada, Ohio.
The Polar Bears
intercepted
senior quarterback Kurt Rocco on the Raiders' first play from scrimmage and began its
first drive at the Mount Union 30. Seven plays and 11 yards later
Northern settled for a 36-yard Jake Heaphy field goal.
By the end of
the first quarter the Bears had run 19 plays, all but two of which came in
Raider territory, and had gained 28 yards. They led 3-0.
It could have been worse. It should have been worse.
Three of the
Orange & Black's
four first quarter drives started in Mount Union territory, on the 30, the 29
and the 47. The drive that did not start on that side of the field began at the Northern 47. But
three points was all they could manage. One drive ended with sophomore
free safety Alex Ferrara's first career interception.
The Purple &
White ran
18 plays in the opening period, gaining 60 yards. Every play began on
its own side of the field. Two resulted in intercepted passes.
They managed three first downs and could not get out of their own territory
against a fired up ONU defense that was playing well.
Living with bad field possession, the Raider
offense had trouble finding its rhythm, and had the ball for less than five of the first 15 minutes.
But they trailed by
just three at the end of the quarter because their defense was even better
than Northern's.
It was the first
time Mount Union was held scoreless in the first quarter since a 14-0 win at
Baldwin-Wallace in 2006. It also marked the first time the
Raiders trailed in a regular season game since the 21-14 loss to Ohio
Northern in Alliance in 2005.
But it could (should)
have been worse.
When the second
quarter began, MTU was on the Northern 35, in the
middle of a drive that began on its own 33. On the sixth play of the
period, senior wideout Cecil Shorts lined up at quarterback for the first time this year,
the Raiders own version of the Wildcat formation. Shorts took the snap
and raced around left end, untouched, four yards into the endzone, capping a 12-play, 67-yard drive that
made it 7-3.
Following a
Northern punt, the Purple & White went up 10-3 on a 28-yard Jay Carpenter
field goal that capped a seven-play, 54-yard drive.
Then the Polar
Bears brought the second largest crowd in Dial-Roberson Stadium's six-year history to its feet
when J.J. Mihoci returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown,
knotting the game at 10.
The largest
crowd in stadium history was the 5,177 fans that saw Mount Union defeat Ohio
Northern 44-0 in 2007.
Neither team
scored the rest of the quarter and despite outgaining Northern in total
yards 171 to 47, the score was tied at 10 at halftime.
Mount Union's
defense completely dominated the second half. The Polar Bears ran 29
plays in the third and fourth quarters for a total of 33 yards.
Ohio Northern's
junior quarterback Kyle Simmons, who was held to three of 11 passing for 15
yards and one interception in the first half, completed five of 15 passes for
41 yards in the second.
Sophomore
running back Brent Donley, who ran for 144 yards, averaged 5.0 yards per
carry and scored three touchdowns against 4th ranked North Central (IL) in
the opener, managed just 18 yards on 12 carries against Mount Union's
defense. His longest run of the day went for four yards.
As a team, the
Bears ran for 24 yards on 29 attempts, including minus-eight yards on 11
carries in the second half.
The Raiders took
the lead for good when senior tight end Kyle Miller reeled in a 15-yard
touchdown throw from Rocco that first bounced off an Ohio Northern defender
with 4:57 left in the third stanza, capping a drive that went 71 yards in
nine
plays.
Mount Union took
a 17-10 lead into the final period and put the game away by scoring on its
last two possessions.
The Purple &
White went 39 yards in six plays to take a two touchdown lead with 12:49 left
when Scott Panchik raced in from six-yards out.
The senior
running back followed that up with a two-yard touchdown with 1:30 left that
finished a 15-play, 80-yard drive that took 8:50 off the clock. The
drive began when Sam Kershaw and Judd Lutz sacked Simmons for a 10-yard loss
on fourth and five at Mount Union's nine-yard line.
Panchik finished
with a career high 145 rushing yards and the first two-score game of his
career. Rocco and freshman quarterback Neal Seaman combined to
complete 13 of 27 passes for 169 yards. Each threw an interception.
Shorts led the receiving game with five catches for 94 yards.
Defensively,
Lutz led the way with eight tackles, while James Herbert and Kershaw each
chipped in with seven. Herbert, Joe Millings and Matt Williamson
recorded sacks while Kershaw and Lutz shared one. Ferrara's
interception was the only takeaway.
Mount Union moves to
2-0
overall and 1-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play with the win. The Purple Raiders
will host Muskingum in the home opener next Saturday. The Fighting Muskies will enter the contest
0-2 overall and
0-1 in
the OAC. Kickoff is set for 7:00
p.m. under the lights at Mount Union Stadium.
