Raiders rout Muskies under the lights in home opener
Mount
Union scored four second quarter touchdowns to defeat Muskingum 45-14 Saturday before
4,567 fans at Mount Union
Stadium in the home opener played under the lights on M-Club Hall of Fame
night.
The start of the
game was delayed 30 minutes due to a power failure near the campus that
knocked out the stadium lights and scoreboard about an hour before the
scheduled 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
When the contest started, it was
all Purple & White. By the break, the Raiders led 35-0, having
amassed 378 yards of offense while limiting the Muskies to 49. They
had 20 first downs to Muskingum's four, ran 52 plays to 22 and had the ball
for nearly 21 of the first 30 minutes.
Mount Union
drove 82 yards in 10 plays the first time it had the ball to take a 7-0 lead
when senior quarterback Kurt Rocco found senior wide receiver Cecil Shorts
for an eight-yard touchdown.
Scott Panchik
picked up right were he left off in the fourth quarter last week, carrying
the ball eight times for 56 yards. The other two plays were Rocco to
Shorts completions that covered 31 yards.
The Raiders
scored on five of their seven first half possessions. The second
touchdown came on a one-yard Panchik run that ended a 13-play, 68-yard march.
The senior running back ran for another 22-yards on the drive, while
freshman quarterback Neil Seaman completed five of six passes and ran for 13
yards.
Terrance Morring
then scored his 10th carrier rushing touchdown and his first since the first
quarter of a week six win over Wilmington in 2007. The senior running
back missed all of last season to injury.
Morring's two-yard
run finished a two-play, 28-yard drive that was set up when Muskingum muffed
the kickoff. Rocco hit senior wide out Vince Petruziello for 26 yards down to the
two on
the first play.
The final two
scores of the half came on Rocco to Shorts connections. The first
covered 43 yards and was set up by senior safety Roger Stewart's second
career interception at the Muskie 38. The final touchdown came with just
:14 left in the half on a 33-yard pass play that finished a five-play, 50-yard
drive that began with :56 seconds on the clock. Rocco was three of
five on
the drive.
The only scoring
in the third period came on a Jay Carpenter 37-yard field goal.
Through three games, the senior place kicker is a perfect three for three on field goal
attempts and has made all 16 of his extra point tries.
Muskingum scored
its first touchdown in the first minute of the fourth stanza on a fourth
down one-yard Jake Burns to Demetrius Bailey pass, converting an 11-play,
62-yard drive.
Junior
cornerback Chaz Jordan set the Raiders up at the Muskie 40 following a
39-yard kickoff return and the Purple & White scored five plays later when
Zac Lemmon raced in from three-yards out. The sophomore running back had
all five carries on the drive.
Muskingum then
finished the scoring with a 21-yard Burns to Dwight Sutton pass with six
minutes remaining that ended an 11-play, 79-yard possession.
Rocco completed
11 of 17 passes for 256 yards and Seaman finished 11 of 13 for 76.
Petruziello had seven receptions for a game high 124 yards, while Shorts
caught seven passes for 118. Panchik led the ground game with 107
yards on 19 carries.
As a team, Mount
Union ran for 243 yards and passed for 332 for a total of 575.
Muskingum rushed for 27 and threw for 179 for a total of 206.
Defensively,
Lambert Budzinski led the Raiders with six tackles, while Jorge Carbonell
had five and Matt Williamson four. As a team, the Purple & White
sacked Burns six times, with James Coppeler, Charles Dieuseul, James
Herbert, Joe Millings, Shane Peludat and Zac Saum each recording one.
At halftime,
Mount Union College inducted five athletes into the M-Club Hall of Fame.
All five were football players, including: Rob Atwood '94, Jim Ballard '94,
Ed Bubonics '94, Mike Elder '93 and Mike Hallett '94.
The Purple & White improved to
3-0 overall with the win, 2-0 in conference play. The Raiders remain
at home next Saturday and will host Baldwin-Wallace in another night contest
at Mount Union Stadium, with Kickoff slated
for 7:00 p.m.
The Yellow
Jackets enter the contest 1-2 overall and 1-1 in conference games.
Mount Union has defeated Baldwin-Wallace 14 consecutive times and overall the Purple Raiders lead in the series
25-21-1.
