Raiders takeaways turn Red Hawks away in second round
Top ranked Mount Union intercepted a
school-record seven Montclair State passes Saturday in a 62-14 win in the
Second Round of the NCAA Division III playoffs in Alliance.
Brett Baker, Nick Driskill, James Herbert, Drew
McClain, Roger Stewart and Cameron West each
recorded
interceptions, while McClain picked off two passes and
Baker returned his 23 yards for the final touchdown.
The
Raiders had eight takeaways in all and were
plus-seven in turnovers, increasing their turnover
advantage to +16 for the season. The Purple &
White have now won 98 straight games dating back to
1996 when winning the turnover battle, and are 143-1
since 1990, with the lone loss during that span
being a 20-17 setback in the national semifinals
against Wis-La Crosse in 1996 in which they finished
plus-one.
The 62
points scored was also a season high and marks the
sixth straight game of scoring 55 points or more.
Mount Union has now won a nation-best 27 consecutive
games.
Kurt Rocco completed 22 of 31 passes for 277 yards
and three touchdowns and did not throw an
incompletion until the second quarter. By that
time Mount Union had jumped out to a 21-7 lead on a
25-yard pass to Judd Harrold, a Cecil Shorts
seven-yard run and an 11-yard strike to Vince
Peturziello. The Purple & White scored the
first five times it had the ball.
Montclair State got on the board late in the first
quarter on a 57-yard pass from Tom Fischer to Dan
Keegan, marking the first points the Raiders had
given up in 10 quarters going back to the third
stanza of a 58-7 week nine win over Otterbein.
Mount
Union responded with a two-yard Terrance Morring run
to make it 28-7. Morring later scored on
another two-yard run and finished with career highs
in carries (31) and yards (146) to lead all rushers.
For the
second week in a row, the Purple & White offense
decimated a top Division III defense with a balanced
attack. Last week it was 286 passing and 295
rushing yards for a total of 581 against
Washington & Jefferson. This week, MTU amassed
310 rushing and 287 passing for 597 total yards.
Meanwhile, the defense limited Montclair State to
just 15 rushing yards on 22 attempts and 239 total
yards.
Following Morring's first touchdown, Fischer found
Keegan again on a four-yard score to close the gap
to 28-14 with 9:46 left in the second period.
It would be the last points for the Red Hawks in the
game. Shorts finished the first half scoring
with his second touchdown on a three-yard run to
make it 35-14 at the break.
Shorts
would add another three-yard run with six minutes
left in the third. The senior wide receiver
scored three times in all, each coming from the
"Wildcat" position. He had a total
of four rushes for 39 yards and added 53 receiving yards on
five catches. His 19 total touchdowns this
season leads the team.
Morring's second score upped the advantage to 48-14
through three and Petruziello added his second
touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Rocco, in which he
stepped out of a shoe tackle and raced down the
visitor's sideline, early in the
fourth. In addition to scoring twice, Petruziello led
all receivers with six catches covering 94 yards.
The
final touchdown came on Baker's first career
interception and 23-yard return. It was the
second defensive score of the year. For the
second playoff game in a row, Mount Union finished
with an entire second unit on the field.
Defensively,
Chaz Jordan led the way with seven tackles, while McClain added six.
Charles Dieuseul recorded two quarterback sacks and Herbert added one.
In addition, Clantz Liggett had a fumble recovery.
The Purple
Raiders will face Albright in the regional finals next Saturday.
The Lions avenged their only regular season loss with a 27-3 win at Delaware
Valley Saturday.
It will be the first ever meeting between these two schools.
Mount Union enters the contest with a 12-0 record, while Albright is 11-1.
Kickoff is set for 12:00
p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
