Raiders rout Pioneers to finish a perfect 10-0 regular season Top ranked Mount Union shutout Marietta 56-0 Saturday in the regular season finale, played before 4,032 fans on a beautiful, sunny mid-November day with temperatures in the mid-60's at Mount Union Stadium. With the win, the Purple & White finished the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record for the 19th time in school history. The Raiders qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs last week by virtue of winning the Ohio Athletic Conference, and will host Washington & Jefferson in the first round next Saturday. Cecil Shorts led the way with three touchdowns, two via the pass and one on the ground. He led the team in receiving and rushing yards, catching seven passes for 167 yards and rushing twice for 54 yards. His scores came on passing plays of 34 and 59 yards and the rushing touchdown covered 43 yards. Mount Union started slowly on offense, punting after its first two drives and turning it over on downs on the third. It finally took the lead with a touchdown on its fourth possession, a 52-yard scoring pass from Kurt Rocco to Kyle Miller with :16 left in the first quarter. And then the offense couldn't be stopped. The Raiders scored on eight straight possessions through the second and third periods. The onslaught finished with an 89-yard punt return for a touchdown by Jasper Collins, the longest punt return in Mount Union history. In between Miller's touchdown reception and Collins punt return, Terrance Morring scored on a four-yard run, Shorts made it 14-0 with a 43-yard run and then 21-0 with a 34-yard reception from Rocco. A.J. Claycomb finished the first half with a 17-yard touchdown from Rocco to make it 35-0 at halftime. Not only did the offense dominate the second stanza, but so did the defense. While the offense was racking up 222 yards and 28-0 second quarter points, the defense held the Pioneers to just eight yards on 13 plays. Judd Lutz, the senior linebacker that moved to fullback last year because the Raiders needed his help there, recorded his first career interception early in the period to set up Mount Union's second score. The Purple & White scored three more times in the third quarter. First came Shorts' 59-yard reception, followed by a Claycomb 58-yard score, and then Collins' record breaking punt return to finish the scoring with 5:55 still to go in the third. And then the substitutions began. Mount Union saw 79 different players make an appearance in the game, including five different kids that wore a number "2" jersey. Rocco completed 16 of 23 passes for 372 yards and five touchdowns. Claycomb caught three passes for 89 yards, while Vince Petruziello had three grabs for 27 and Miller two catches for 61. Scott Panchik ran for 54 yards on seven carries, while Tyler Harris added 43 yards on five rushes and Morring had 39 yards on nine totes. The Raiders finished with 597 total yards, 225 on the ground and 372 through the air. Marietta was held to just 114 yards, 54 rushing and 60 passing. Defensively, Charles Dieuseul, Lutz and Joe Millings led the way with six tackles each. Mount Union finished 10-0 overall and 9-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, and will host Washington & Jefferson, who finished second in the Presidents Athletic Conference. The Presidents finished 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the PAC. Kickoff is slated for noon at Mount Union Stadium.
