Raiders dominant in rout of Streaks Mount Union scored touchdowns on its first four possessions, and then added one from the defense, in jumping out to a 35-0 first half lead and defeating John Carroll 56-7 Saturday in front of 1,225 fans at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights. The win, coupled with Otterbein's 25-22 upset loss at Marietta, gives the Raiders sole possession of first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference. A win next week over the Cardinals would guarantee the Purple & White an 18th straight OAC football championship and the conference's automatic qualifying bit into the NCAA Division III playoffs. Mount Union's offense looked as sharp as it has all season in scoring touchdowns on five drives of 78 yards or more. Of its seven offensive scores, only a 36-yard march early in the second stanza was shorter than 67 yards. The Raiders scored on drives of 80, 78, 36, 88, 80, 67 and 80 yards. Just for good measure, the defense picked up its first touchdown of the season when Chaz Jordan scooped up a Danny Accotri fumble and raced 43 yards untouched for a 35-0 late in the first half. Kurt Rocco continues to get better every week. The senior from Cincinnati Roger Bacon High School, in his first year as a starter, is now one of the top Division III quarterbacks in the nation. He leads all quarterbacks with a 205.82 passing efficiency, has completed 70% of his passes for over 2,100 yards, and has thrown 22 touchdowns to just five interceptions. Rocco has become very good at going through his reads to find an open receiver and is one of the harder quarterbacks for defenses to tackle. On Saturday, he completed 26 of 32 passes for 359 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. His most impressive play may have been a five-yard touchdown pass to Cecil Shorts on fourth and one, in which he was wrapped up by two different Blue Streaks, but was able to fight off the tackle and stay on his feet long enough to find Shorts in the back of the endzone for a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. Never mind that he was throwing into a stiff wind because that has not slowed him all season. The Raiders jumped out to a 7-0 advantage after driving 80 yards in 11 plays when Terrance Morring scored on a two-yard run with 6:24 left in the first. Morring scored on another two-yard run for a 28-0 lead that capped a 13-play, 88-yard drive in the second. The senior running back went over the 100-yard mark for the third week in a row, rushing for 101 yards on 23 carries and two scores. The other first half touchdown came on a 36-yard strike from Rocco to A.J. Claycomb that capped a six-play, 78-yard drive to make it 14-0 in the first period. Claycomb finished with three receptions for 56 yards and one score. The Purple & White went ahead 42-0 when Vince Petruziello raced 50 yards with a Rocco pass to cap a six-play, 80-yard drive to start the second half. Petruziello had 114 receiving yards on six catches and one touchdown. John Carroll finally got on the scoreboard with 5:36 left in the third when Jeff Javorek scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper. The scoring drive covered 11 yards in four plays and was set up on Mount Union's only miscue of the game, a bad snap out of the shotgun formation that the Blue Streaks recovered. The Raiders got the touchdown back with 1:53 remaining in the third when Shorts caught a 14-yard touchdown from Rocco, capping a seven-play, 67-yard drive. Shorts finished with eight receptions for 88 yards and two scores. The only scoring in the fourth quarter was a two-yard touchdown run by Tyler Harris, capping an 11-play, 80-yard drive, with 7:07 remaining. Harris had six carries for 23 yards and one touchdown. Mount Union finished with 513 total yards, 129 on the ground and 384 through the air. John Carroll managed 117 yards, 65 rushing and 112 passing. The Raiders finished plus-two in turnover ratio and are now plus-five on the year. Defensively, Ryan Renbarger led the way with eight tackles and one interception, while Judd Lutz and Roger Stewart each recorded tackles. Jordan and Petruziello each had fumble recoveries, while Alex Ferrara and James Coppeler had sacks. With the win, Mount Union improves to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in conference play. The Purple Raiders return home to host 7-1 (6-1) Otterbein next Saturday, and a win over the Cardinals will guarantee a conference title and playoff berth for the 18th consecutive season. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
