Fast start lifts Purple Raiders to win over Student Princes Number one ranked Mount Union scored two quick touchdowns Saturday and went on to defeat Heidelberg 44-14 before 1,249 fans at Frost-Kalnow Stadium in Tiffin. Two early Student Prince miscues led to a 14-0 lead after just two minutes had been played as the Purple & White posted its 21st consecutive victory, the longest current win streak in all of college football. Three Raiders had a huge hand in the win and recorded career days in doing so. Senior quarterback Kurt Rocco completed 24 of 34 passes for 406 yards and four touchdowns. The completions, attempts, yards and touchdowns were all career highs. The 406 passing yards were the fifth most in Mount Union football history, trailing only Bill Borchert's 584 yards against Hanover in 1995, Jim Ballard's 455 yards against Ohio Northern in 1993, Mike Jorris' 421 yards against John Carroll in 2005 and Gary Smeck's 414 yards against Ohio Northern in 1998, and just ahead of Borchert's 402 yards versus Marietta in 1995. Senior wide receiver Cecil Shorts benefited the most from Rocco's big day, catching a personal best 13 passes for a career high 297 yards and two touchdowns. Only Randell Knapp's 310 receiving yards against Wis-Whitewater in 2003 and Adam Marino's 308 yards versus Ohio Northern in 1999 topped Shorts' day in Purple Raider football history. Senior running back Terrance Morring also achieved career highs in rushes (22) and yards (108), while matching a personal best two touchdowns on scoring runs of one and nine yards. The big plays began on the first play from scrimmage. Sophomore free safety Alex Ferrara intercepted Student Prince junior quarterback Adam Miller on the 'Berg 41. Three plays later Morring scored on a one-yard run, giving the Purple & White a 7-0 lead. It would become 14-0 less than a minute later. Senior safety James Coppeler forced and recovered a Matt Wilde fumble at the 17 on the ensuing kickoff, and Rocco connected with senior wideout Vince Petruziello for a 21-yard touchdown two plays later. Following a Heidelberg punt, Mount Union marched 63 yards in five plays to make it 21-0 on Morring's nine-yard run. The 'Berg responded by putting together it's best drive of the contest, a six-play, 67-yard march that was capped by Miller's one-yard run, making it 21-7 after one. The Raiders added 10 second quarter points to lead 31-7 at halftime. Senior place kicker Jay Carpenter booted a 33-yard field goal with 9:10 remaining in the half, and Shorts caught a short swing pass and turned it into a 79-yard touchdown, the longest play of his career, at the 6:22 mark. At the break Mount Union had 370 total yards to Heidelberg's 161. The only scoring in the third stanza came on the first possession of the second half, a three-play, 66-yard drive that ended with a Rocco to Shorts 45-yard touchdown 1:17 into the quarter. Through six games, the Raiders have not allowed a single point in the third quarter, outscoring its first six opponents 38-0 in the period following intermission. The two teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Senior tight end Kyle Miller caught his fourth touchdown of the season on an 11-yard reception from Rocco with 13:09 left, capping a nine-play, 54-yard drive, making it 44-7. The Student Princes finished the scoring when Miller hit freshman tight end Brett Weidermann on a five-yard touchdown with 4:23 remaining. Mount Union finished with 536 total yards to Heidelberg's 333. Defensively, senior linebacker Judd Lutz, who went to Tiffin Columbian High School and played his prep football on this field, led the way with nine tackles. Senior strong safety Drew McClain added eight hits and junior cornerback Chaz Jordan had seven. Ferrara and senior safety Roger Stewart each had interceptions, while Coppeler recovered a fumble. Senior tackle Matt Williamson had two quarterback sacks, while senior end Joe Millings and senior tackle Zac Saum each had one. With the win, the Raiders' improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play, and will return home next week to take on Wilmington at Mount Union Stadium. The Purple & White have never lost to the Quakers, and own an 11-0 overall record.
