Top ranked Raiders rally in 4th quarter to conquer Crusaders Number one ranked Mount Union scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to come from behind and defeat 21st rated Capital 28-21 Saturday before a standing room only crowd of 3,201 fans at Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus. Trailing 21-14 following a Marty Assman to Dominic D'Andrea 23-yard touchdown pass for the Crusaders with 11:51 remaining, the Purple Raiders put together two touchdown drives to win their 20th straight game. The 20-game winning streak is the longest current consecutive victory streak in all of NCAA football. It was the first time Mount Union had to come from behind in the fourth quarter since defeating Capital in the 2005 national quarterfinals 34-31 when Mike Jorris connected with Anthony Antonucci for a two-yard touchdown with 3:41 left, capping an eight-play, 46-yard, game winning drive. The last time the Purple & White needed to come from behind in the fourth quarter during the regular season was in a 33-30 win in 2001 over John Carroll, when Chuck Moore scored on a seven-yard run with :26 left. Those at Bedford High School that night will never forget the Josh Liddell one-handed catch on fourth and three during the final drive. The Raiders tied the Crusaders at 21-all with 8:17 left when Kurt Rocco found Kyle Miller for a 36-yard touchdown, capping a nine-play, 80-yard drive. Rocco completed two third-down passes to Cecil Shorts during the drive to keep possession. Following the kick, Capital moved 25 yards to the MTU 47 before Assman was hit by James Herbert, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Lambert Budzinski at the Crusader 48. It was the only CAP turnover in the game. After a Shorts rush for no gain, Rocco hit Scott Panchik for 24 yards and A.J. Claycomb for 17 to set up a first and goal at the seven. Panchik carried for two yards to the five and then went the final five yards to give Mount Union a 28-21 lead with 3:10 remaining. Capital had a chance to tie the game, moving 40 yards in nine plays to the Raiders' 38, converting a fourth and four along the way, before Assman's pass to Ryan Gunnerson on fourth and 16 was incomplete with :48 left. The score was tied 14-14 at halftime after both teams scored in the final minute of the second stanza. First, Assman completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Matt White with :54 remaining, converting a seven-play, 86-yard drive to give the Crusaders their first lead of the game. It was short-lived though, as the Purple & White went 74 yards in five plays in just :26 to tie the game when Panchik scored on a one-yard run with :22 left in the half. Rocco was four for four on the drive, completing a seven-yard pass to Shorts, a seven-yard pass to Claycomb, a 25-yard pass to Miller and a 19-yard pass to Vince Petruziello before Panchik's run evened the score. Mount Union opened the scoring at the 6:47 mark of the first period when Rocco hit Shorts for a 10-yard touchdown, capping a seven-play, 59-yard drive. MTU drove 67 yards to the CAP five on the initial possession of the game, but Jay Carpenter missed wide right on a 26-yard field goal attempt, his first miss of the season. Capital tied the game at 7-7 with 8:09 remaining in the second stanza on a one-yard Assman run that capped a 13-play, 70-yard march. Mount Union finished with 407 total yards (6.4 ypp) to Capital's 378 (4.8). The Raiders tailed 80 on the ground and 327 through the air, while the Crusaders had 129 rushing yards and 249 passing yards. Rocco had his first 300-yard passing game, completing 21 of 31 throws for 314 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. What cannot be read in the box score was the toughness he showed numerous times by standing in the pocket and taking a hit before delivering a pass. Panchik carried the ball 16 times for 43 yards and two scores, while Morring had nine carries for 33 yards. Shorts recorded 10 receptions covering 91 yards and one touchdown, while Claycomb caught six passes for 96 yards, Petruziello had three catches for 36 yards and Miller two grabs for 61 yards and a score. Defensively, Sam Kershaw led the Purple & White with 14 tackles, while Judd Lutz and Drew McClain each recorded nine and James Herbert had eight. Mount Union improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play with the win. Capital fell to 4-1 and 3-1. The Raiders will travel to Heidelberg next Saturday with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. at Frost-Kalnow Stadium in Tiffin.
