Raiders blank Jackets on Homecoming in Alliance
Mount Union shut out Baldwin-Wallace 30-0 Saturday night
before a standing room only crowd of 6,472 fans at Mount Union Stadium. It
marks the 18th consecutive season the Raiders have blanked at least one
regular season opponent. The last season it did not happen was 1991,
which was also the last time the Purple & White failed to win the Ohio
Athletic Conference football championship.
Or maybe they should be called the Black & Black, as for the first time the
Raiders wore black jersey's on top of black pants, showcasing the new pants
on Homecoming. Mount Union now has three different colored pants to go
along with three different colored jerseys: purple, white and black.
Things are changing in Alliance. The College's Board of Trustee's just
unanimously voted to change the school from a "college" to a "university."
So the only thing to decide now is whether the Purple Raiders will be known
as the University of Mount Union, or Mount Union University.
Defense
was the order of the night, at least early on, as neither team could get much
going offensively in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets managed three
first downs and 59 yards on 18 plays, while the Purple & White grabbed two
first downs and 49 yards on 13 plays.
The Raiders led 3-0 after the period thanks to a 32-yard Jay Carpenter field goal
that was set up by a 36-yard punt return by Vince Petruziello to the Jackets
29. The points came on MTU's first possession of the
game in which it managed 13 yards on eight plays.
Mount Union's defense got even better in the second stanza, allowing
Baldwin-Wallace just 25 yards on 12 plays, while the offense began to move
the ball, with 167 yards on 20 snaps in the quarter.
The Raiders also scored twice in the period, with interceptions setting up
each touchdown.
The first score, a one-yard run by Scott Panchik, capped a six-play, 26-yard
drive that began when Drew McClain intercepted Anthony Gardner on the 29 and
returned it three yards.
It marked McClain's first interception since his pick and 78-yard return for
a touchdown in the fourth quarter of last year's Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl
became the biggest play in that championship game victory.
The second interception came during the key sequence in this contest and put a real nail
in the Yellow Jackets coffin as they left the field at halftime.
Facing a second and 20 from Mount Union's 25 with just over four minutes
left in the half, Gardner was intercepted by Ryan Renbarger on the six-yard
line. Had B-W found a way to get into the endzone, it would have
closed the gap to 10-7, but instead, the Raiders put together the drive of
the game, marching 94 yards in eight plays in 3:13 to take a 16-0 lead with :50
left when Cecil Shorts scored out of the Wildcat formation on a seven-yard run.
Mount Union added two second half touchdowns while limiting Baldwin-Wallace
to 47 yards on 24 plays and two first downs in the final two periods.
Panchik scored his second touchdown on a 13-yard run with 8:26 left in the
third, capping a seven-play, 62-yard drive that made it 23-0 through three. Panchik and Terrance Morring each ran for over 100 yards to pace a running
game that accumulated 249 rushing yards.
Neal Seaman finished the scoring with a four-yard run on the first play of the
fourth quarter, ending a seven-play, 39-yard drive. Seaman and Kurt Rocco
combined to complete 12 of 17 passes for 168 yards. Shorts led all
receivers with three receptions for 80 yards.
For the game, the Raiders finished with 417 yards to Jackets 131. Judd
Lutz led the defense with a career high 11 tackles, while Sam Kershaw added 10.
With the win, the
Purple & White improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play and will
travel to Columbus to face Capital next week. The Crusaders will also enter the
contest 4-0 and 3-0 and will look to break of string of 23 straight loses to
Mount Union, including six defeats
in the last four years. Kickoff is
set for 1:30 p.m. from Bernlor Stadium.
