Mount Union senior running back Nate Kmic picked up right where he left off
last season in running around, over and through opposing defenders in
Saturday's season opener as the Number #1 ranked Purple Raiders defeated #10 St. John Fisher 33-3
in front of 4,872 fans at
Mount Union Stadium.
The opening day
win was Mount Union's 21st consecutive to start the season, dating back to a
17-15 loss to Wooster in 1987. Overall, Larry Kehres is now 22-1 in
opening contests.
Kmic rushed for
231 yards on 26 carries, 154 of those coming in the first half. He scored the
first two touchdowns of the game on runs of 7 and 15 yards and now has
5,515 career rushing yards, placing him ninth overall in Division III
football history, and 84 career touchdowns, just seven shy of the Division
III record of 91 held by R.J. Bowers of Grove City.
The two first
half scoring
drives covered 74 yards in 11 plays and 95 yards in 10 plays. Most of
the work was on the ground as senior quarterback Greg Micheli completed just
four of eight passing attempts for 58 yards in the first half.
Junior
cornerback Ryan Renbarger made it 20-0 late in the first half when he
stepped in front of a Tim Bailey pass for his second interception of the
game and raced 21 yards untouched to the endzone.
At the break
Mount Union had 237 total yards of offense and limited Fisher to 118, of
which 66 came on one second quarter drive that ended at the Raider 33 when a
fourth and two pass attempt by Bailey intended for Jimmy Smith fell
incomplete.
Mount Union
totally dominated the third quarter, scoring twice to take a 33-0 lead. The Raiders
out gained the Cardinals in the third stanza 219 yards to 20.
Micheli and
junior wide out Cecil Shorts were the third quarter story. Micheli
completed seven of eight passes for 154 yards and connected twice with Shorts for
touchdowns covering 35 and 36 yards. The first drive
went 50 yards in
two plays and the second 93 yards in five.
Micheli finished
with 224 passing and 27 rushing yards, completing 14 of 19 tosses with two
scores and no interceptions. Shorts led all receivers with six catches
covering 147 yards.
Daryl Ely
recorded an interception and fumble recovery while Roger Stewart led the
Raiders with eight tackles and Joe Millings added seven. Mount Union finished
with 524 yards of total offense while St. John Fisher netted 249.
The Purple &
White will have a bye this Saturday before opening Ohio Athletic Conference
play on September 20th against Ohio Northern with a night contest at Mount
Union Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
