Mount Union
senior quarterback Greg Micheli shined last night as Mount Union defeated
Ohio Northern 44-7 before 7,232 fans at Mount Union Stadium in the
conference opener for both teams.
Micheli
completed 23 of 25 passes for 323 yards, three touchdowns, and added another 50
yards on six rushes.
He connected
twice with junior wide receiver Cecil Shorts in the second quarter on
touchdowns covering 13 and 20 yards to give the Purple Raiders a 17-0
halftime advantage. Shorts finished with 108 receiving yards on seven
catches with two touchdowns and added a rushing score on a 14-yard end
around in the third quarter that made it 30-0.
Northern's game
plan was to slow down Nate Kmic. And for the most part, they
succeeded, holding the senior running back to 89 rushing yards on 25
carries. But that opened the passing lanes for Micheli, who picked
apart the ONU secondary all night long.
Kmic scored
once, on a one-yard run in the third period to make it 37-0 after three.
It was his school and conference best 85th career rushing score, leaving him
just six behind the NCAA Division III record of 91 held by Grove City's R.J.
Bowers.
The other story
was the Raider defense. The Purple & White limited Northern to just 13
rushing yards in 25 attempts, and 176 total yards with almost half of that
coming in the fourth quarter against the second unit.
The Polar Bears
had the ball for under 24 minutes and converted on only five of 13 third
down tries and one of three fourth down attempts.
By contrast,
Mount Union racked up 506 yards, 323 through the air, and 183 on the ground.
Junior place
kicker Jay Carpenter opened the scoring with a 27-yard field goal in the
first quarter.
Sophomore
receiver A.J. Claycomb made it 23-0 in the third quarter when he scooped up
a Vince Petruziello fumble and rumbled 15 yards to pay dirt.
Petruziello, a junior wide out, had caught Micheli's aerial and fought 26
yards to the 15 before senior free safety Cullen Rasmussen jarred the ball
loose.
Judd Lutz made
it 44-0 in the fourth on an 11-yard run. It was the junior fullback's
first career touchdown.
Ohio Northern
finally got on the board with 18 seconds remaining when sophomore
quarterback Kyle Simmons found sophomore wide out Sam Amidon for a 20-yard
touchdown.
Defensively,
junior strong safety Drew McClain and senior linebacker Chas Yoder each
recorded five tackles, while six players shared five quarterback sacks, led
by senior defensive end Joe Millings' 1.5.
Mount Union moves to
2-0
overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win. The Purple Raiders
travel to Muskingum next Saturday. The Fighting Muskies will enter the contest 1-1 overall and
0-1 in
conference play following their 48-7 loss to Otterbein. Kickoff is set for 1:30
p.m. from McConagha Stadium.
Ohio Northern drops to
0-2 and
0-1 and will have to regroup in a hurry as it hosts unbeaten Otterbein next week. The
Polar Bears will likely need to win out to keep their playoff hopes alive.
