Kmic breaks record as Raiders defeat Statesmen
Nate Kmic became the career rushing leader in Division III in
helping the Purple Raiders to a 42-7 win over Hobart in the Second Round of
the NCAA Division III playoffs Saturday at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance,
Ohio.
The senior
running back ran for 235 yards and scored four times and has now rushed for 7,449
yards, surpassing the previous Division III mark of 7,353 yards by R.J. Bowers of Grove
City ('97-'00). Only Danny Woodhead's total of 7,962 rushing yards for
Division II Chadron St. ('04-'07) is more in NCAA football history.
The Raiders led
14-0 at halftime on the strength of two Kmic touchdowns. The first, a
four-yard run, capped a 13-play, 60-yard drive to open the game. The
second came on the very next offensive series, when Kmic dashed 41 yards to
cap a two-play, 56-yard march. Ten minutes into the game it was 14-0 and
the Purple & White had all the points it would need.
Hobart's two biggest
plays were a 24-yard pass from Tyler Vincent to Orlando Patterson and a 20-yard
run by Vincent. Both plays came when the Statesmen lined up to punt
but were successful on
fake punt attempts by Vincent.
Sophomore free
safety Chaz Jordan intercepted a Rich Doyle pass to end Hobart's second
possession of the third quarter and triggered Mount Union's offense, which
had gone four straight series without points, back to life.
The Raiders
marched 44 yards in seven plays to make it 21-0 when Kmic scored from
four-yards out.
Hobart then went
71 yards in 13 plays to cut the lead to 21-7 when Doyle hit P.J. Overdorf on
a 14-yard pass play. The drive was jump-started on Vincent's second punt
fake of the game, this one the 24-yard pass to Patterson from the Statesmen 29-yard line.
The
Raiders responded by scoring touchdowns the next three times they had the
ball. Kmic scored for the fourth and final time to end a 6-play,
64-yard drive to make it 28-7. That was the score after three periods.
Greg Micheli
threw for two touchdowns in the final stanza, an eight-yard strike to junior
wide receiver Cecil Shorts on fourth and seven to cap a 13-play, 96-yard
drive, and then on a 13-yard toss to junior wide out Vince Petruziello, to finish off a
six-play, 65-yard march with six minutes
remaining that ended the scoring.
The senior
quarterback, named as one of ten finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy during
the week, finished with 223 yards on 14 of 22 passing, two touchdowns and no
interceptions.
Petruziello led
the way with seven of those receptions covering 109 yards while the
Raiders finished with 503 yards of total offense and limited Hobart
to 196.
Defensively,
senior linebacker Chas Yoder led the
way with nine tackles, while sophomore linebacker Sam Kershaw recorded eight.
The Purple
& White will face Cortland St. next Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.
The Red Dragons defeated Curry 42-0 Saturday to advance to the Regional
Finals in Alliance.
It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Mount Union enters the contest as the only unbeaten team remaining in the
Division III playoffs, while Cortland St. is 11-1 and champions of the
New Jersey Athletic Conference. Kickoff is set for 12:00
p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
