Number one ranked Mount Union scored touchdowns
on each of its first four possessions in racing out to a 28-0 first half
lead and dismantling fourth rated Capital 49-7 Saturday before 4,231 fans at
Mount Union Stadium.
The Raiders
scored on their second play from scrimmage, a 68-yard pass from senior
quarterback Greg Micheli to junior wide out Cecil Shorts. The two
hooked up later in the half on passes covering 40 and 19 yards for
touchdowns.
Micheli
completed 22 of 29 passes covering 335 yards and three scores. The
Purple & White's fifth and final drive of the first half ended at the
Crusaders' 18 when Micheli threw his first interception of the season on a
ball that bounced out of Shorts' hands and into the arms of Capital
linebacker Sam Jacobs for the only non-touchdown drive of the half.
Meanwhile, Mount
Union's defense was stifling once again, holding the Crusaders' fourth rated
offense to no first half points and just one touchdown in the game.
The Capital
score came in the third quarter, making it 28-7, on a 16-yard pass from
quarterback Marty Assmann to receiver Ryan Gunnarson.
Mount Union
responded immediately, going 92 yards in nine plays, going back up by 28 when
senior running back Nate Kmic scored on a two-yard run.
Kmic scored
three times in the game, on runs of seven, two and 28 yards. He now has the
most rushing touchdowns (94), most overall touchdowns (98) and most points
scored (588) in NCAA Division III football history.
He finished with
168 yards on 21 carries (8.0 ypc) and moved into third place all time in
NCAA Division III rushing history with 6,171 yards, behind Wis-Whitewater's
Justin Beaver (6,584) and Grove City's R.J. Bowers (7,353).
The Raiders'
final points came when Scott Panchik scored his first career touchdown on a
two-yard run late in the game. Panchik finished with 65 yards on 13
carries (5.0 ypc), which was just four yards shy of Capital's total rushing
yards for the game (69).
For the second
week in the row, the Purple & White accumulated more than 600 yards of total
offense, 614 this week compared to Capital's 199.
Defensively,
junior defensive end James Herbert led the team with eight tackles, while
senior linebacker Chaz Yoder had six and junior defensive tackle Matt
Williamson recorded five. Sophomore linebacker Sam Kershaw made his
first career interception.
Mount Union
improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play with the win. Capital fell to
4-1 and 3-1.
It will be
Homecoming next weekend when the Purple
Raiders host Heidelberg. Last year, Mount Union
defeated the Student Princes 62-3 in Tiffin and
have won 19 straight in the series. Overall, the Raiders own a 38-13
mark against The 'Berg with the last loss coming in 1988. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at
Mount Union Stadium.
