Warhawks end Raiders' 37-game win streak in championship contest Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated Mount Union 31-21 in the 35th Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl to claim the University's first football national championship. The 2007 Division III title game was a rematch of the last two Stagg Bowls, both won by the Purple Raiders, 35-28 in 2005 and 35-16 in 2006. Mount Union won those games by forcing turnovers, finishing drives with touchdowns and making the big plays. This year, it was the Warhawks that did that, ending the Raiders' 37-game winning streak, which had been the nation's longest, in the process. Whitewater senior running back Justin Beaver was named the games Most Outstanding Player after blitzing Mount Union's defense for 249 rushing yards and a touchdown. His 66-yard run late in the game led to the Warhawks final touchdown and his 45-yard run late in the first half led to a field goal and a 10-0 lead at the intermission. Whitewater opened the scoring on their first drive after stopping the Raiders on downs at the 29. The Warhawks went 71 yards in six plays to go up 7-0 when quarterback Danny Jones snuck it in from a yard out. Following a punt by each team, the Purple & White moved to the Warkhawks goal line, but Nate Kmic was stopped inches short on fourth and one, keeping Mount Union off the scoreboard in the first half for the first time in 18 seasons. The play was initially ruled a touchdown, but replays overturned the call after showing Kmic fell just shy of the endzone. In the second quarter the Raiders moved to Whitewater's 29 but Greg Micheli came up a yard short on fourth and two. In all, Mount Union had six drives end inside the Warhawks' 35-yard line, three on downs and three on turnovers. The Purple & White fumbled six times in the game, losing three, and threw an interception, finishing minus-2 in turnover ratio for the game. Whitewater made it a two-score game in the final seconds of the second quarter after Beaver raced 45 yards to the 19 and Jeff Schebler kicked a 32-yard field goal, making it 10-0 at halftime. It marked the first time the Raiders trailed at the break since the last time they lost, week seven of the 2005 season, to Ohio Northern, 21-14. The Polar Bears led at halftime of that game 21-7. The Warhawks made it 17-0 on the first possession of the second half. The score came when Beaver was hit and fumbled shy of the goal line with the ball bouncing into the endzone just out of the reach of Pat McCullough and Tony DeRiggi before Whitewater's left tackle Mike Sherman fell on it for the touchdown. The 17-point deficit was the biggest for Mount Union since losing to St. John's (MN) by 18 (24-6) in the 2003 Stagg Bowl. But the Raiders responded with two touchdowns over the next six minutes to cut the lead to 17-14. Kmic got Mount Union on the board on an 11-yard run, capping a 6-play, 57-yard drive. Then DeRiggi forced a Beaver fumble, which was picked up and returned 19-yards by Jonathan Andrews to the Whitewater 19. Kmic scored from a yard out eight plays later to make it 17-14 with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter. Over the next 10:05, Mount Union held Whitewater to 12 plays, 38 yards, two first downs and three punts, but had to punt twice itself and then turned the ball over on a fumble when Micheli was tackled at the Warhawks' 39 with 9:09 to go in a three point game. Whitewater regained a 10-point lead when Beaver scored his only touchdown on a 13-yard run. The Raiders could no longer tackle Beaver. He carried the ball six of the seven plays for 43 yards on the drive. The Purple & White answered right back, making it 24-21 on a 10-play, 71-yard march 2:35 later when Kmic scored for the third time on a 4-yard run. But Whitewater put the nail in the coffin after the kickoff when Beaver broke off a 66-yard run to Mount Union's four and Jones just got across the goal line from a yard out four plays later with only 1:58 remaining. Andy Murray then intercepted Micheli in the final minute on a pass that was deflected to end Mount Union's last chance. The group of seniors that walked off the field for the last time posted a 55-3 record during their four-year careers at Mount Union, including four Ohio Athletic Conference championships, three Stagg Bowl appearances and two national championships. When you win so much it makes it all the more difficult to lose in your last game. But this group of seniors will realize, in time, how good they were from the 2004 through 2007 seasons while wearing the Purple, Black & White of Mount Union College. Over that four-year period, no Division III football team was better.
