Raiders dominate Fisher to advance to semifinals for 13th straight year
Mount Union scored touchdowns on each of its first three possessions in
drubbing St. John Fisher 52-10 Saturday in the national quarterfinals before
2,678 at Mount Union Stadium.
The Raiders will
host Bethel (MN) next Saturday in the national semifinals for the right to
play for the Division III national championship on December 15th in the Amos
Alonzo Stagg Bowl in Salem, Virginia. It is the 13th consecutive
season and the 15th time in the last 16 years the Purple & White have
advanced to the final four.
Nate Kmic ran
for 199 yards on 20 carries and scored twice. His one-yard run finished
a five-play, 76-yard drive that was completed in 1:26 to make it 14-0. He
accounted for all but 10 yards on the march that made it 14-0 less than six
minutes into the contest.
This was
important because it was a larger lead than Mount Union ever had in last
year's 26-14 semifinal victory over Fisher. The Cardinals played a
great game in 2006, and it was still very much anybody's game in the fourth
quarter of that contest.
St. John Fisher
had to be stunned by Mount Union's start this time around. And when Pierre Garcon caught his
second touchdown pass from Greg Micheli in the first quarter, making it
21-0, the whole contingent that made the trip from Pittsford, NY had to
wonder what the heck was going on.
But this is
Mount Union. They beat you in close games, they beat you in a
blowouts, but usually, they just beat you. Since the first national
championship season of 1993, the Purple & White have lost only seven times
in 205 games. That's 198-7 over the last 15 years.
Mount Union won
this game like they win so many. The Raiders ran the ball and
they stopped the run. The Purple & White rushed for 410 yards and
averaged 8.2 yards per carry. Last year they ran for 378 yards and
averaged 7.4 against the Cardinals.
Kmic
accounted for 371 of the yards a year ago in breaking the single game school
rushing record. This season he had more help. Justin Wray ran
for 88 yards, Micheli 69, and Scott Panchik, Scott Thomas, Cecil Shorts
and Trevor Bruney combined to add another 54.
By contrast
Fisher ran for 52 yards on 31 carries, an average of 1.7 yards per carry.
Garcon's first
period touchdowns were from six and nine yards and both finished drives of better
than 60 yards. After three possessions, Mount Union had rushed for 127
yards, passed for 74 and led 21-0.
Meanwhile, the
Cardinals moved inside the Raiders 30-yard line four different times in the
first half, including twice inside the 20, but came away with no points.
A missed 41-yard field goal ended one drive. Mount Union also blocked
a 33-yard attempt.
Fisher then had
it first and 10 from Mount's 14, but lost 18 yards over the next three plays
and decided to punt from the 32 on fourth and 28.
The final trip
into Raider territory found the Cardinals with a first and 10 from the 26,
but after a three-yard run by Ryan Hanson on first down, Rob Kramer threw
three straight incompletions and Mount Union held on downs.
At halftime,
Mount Union had 260 total yards of offense to St. John Fisher's 176.
While the Raiders scored three times, the Cardinals were zero of seven on third
down tries and zero of one on fourth down.
The Purple &
White added 17 third quarter points to put the game away. After
forcing a three and out by Fisher to start the half, Mount Union drove 65
yards in only four plays in just under a minute to grab a 28-0 lead when
Kmic scampered 34 yards for a touchdown.
The defense then
forced another three and out and Mike Zimmerman booted a 28-yard field goal
at the 8:16 mark to make it 31-0. Zimmerman's 131 points this season
is the best single season scoring output by a kicker in NCAA Division III
football history. His 89 extra points is also a single season best,
breaking his own mark of 84 from 2006.
Garcon then
caught a 31-yard strike from Micheli for the duo's third touchdown hookup of
the game. That capped a 7-play, 89-yard drive that made it 38-0.
Garcon entered the game tied with Ohio Northern's
Steve Vagedes (1996-99) for the Ohio Athletic Conference mark for career
touchdown receptions, but now has that record all for himself with 46 in his
career.
St. John
Fisher's Chris Pierri finally got his team on the scoreboard by kicking a
21-yard field goal with 25 seconds left in the period. But even that
was a Mount Union victory of sorts. Fisher had a first and goal from
the two but lost 2 yards in three plays and settled for 3 points rather than
go for the touchdown on fourth down.
Justin Wray
scored on a 16-yard run and Cecil Shorts added an eight-yard score to give the
Raiders a 52-3 fourth quarter lead before Kramer hooked up with Corey
Jackson from 34-yards out for the Cardinals only touchdown.
Mount Union
finished with 599 yards to St. John Fisher's 358. Neither team turned
the ball over but one of the biggest stats was Fisher managing to convert
just one of 14 third downs in the game.
Micheli
completed 15 of 22 passes for 189 yards, while Garcon led the air attack with
six catches covering 75 yards.
Defensively, Chris Kappas led the Raiders with 10 tackles while Patrick
McCullough had 9 and Tony DiReggi notched 8. The Purple & White
recorded 5 sacks and allowed just 1. McCullough had 2, Matt Kostelnik
and Matt Williamson each had 1 and Troy Chaffin and Sam Kershaw shared
the other.
Left guard Derek
Blanchard set a new Mount Union record by making his 56th consecutive start,
dating back to his first game as a freshman in 2004, eclipsing the old mark
of 55 by All-American linebacker Jason Hall (1994-98). Hall and
All-American cornerback Mike Miller (1999-03) also shared the Raiders'
record for games played (55).
Mount Union will
face Bethel for the first time in school history in next Saturday's national
semifinal. The Royals defeated St. John's (MN) 17-14 on the final week
of the regular season to win the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference, and have run off playoff victories over Concordia (WI) (28-0), Wis-Eau Claire (21-12) and Central (IA) (27-13) and will travel to Alliance
with a 12-1 record having won 12 straight after a season opening loss to
Buena Vista (21-16).
The Purple Raiders enter the contest riding the nation's longest winning
streak at 36 straight and are 13-0 this season. Kickoff is set for 12:00
p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
