Davis, defense lead Raiders to 52-point playoff win
Mount Union limited to The
College of New Jersey to just 46 yards of total offense, while gaining 508
itself, in posting a 59-7 second round playoff win Saturday before
2,593 fans at Mount Union Stadium.
How dominant were the Raiders? Consider this: New Jersey ran 22
plays in the second half and generated four yards. For the game, the
Lions managed 19 rushing yards on 33 plays, a little better than half a yard
per rush, and 27 passing yards on 10 completions, which works out to 2.7
yards per catch.
The Lions only score was setup when Justin Wray fumbled a punt on his
own 12. It took New Jersey five plays to get into the endzone on a
one-yard run by Dan Dornacker, making it 14-7 early in the second quarter.
That really was the only highlight offensively for the Lions. Their
biggest pass play went for six yards. Their best play overall was a
19-yard run by backup quarterback Bill Picatagi, whose other 12 rushes
accounted for a total of four yards. TCNJ converted on just two of 16
third downs and one of two fourth down tries.
Meanwhile, Mount Union fought through a blitzing Lions' defensive package to
average 7.5 yards per play. That includes the six New Jersey sacks
that went for 35 yards in loses.
Mount Union had allowed just 13 sacks
in the first 11 games, but knew there would be pressure as New Jersey likes
to send five, six, even seven players on some plays.
Greg Micheli stood up to the pressure and found open receivers all day.
Bryson Davis had the biggest game, finishing with personal bests with six
catches covering 188 yards and three touchdowns. He alone accounted
for more than four times the offense generated by the Lions.
Micheli finished 18 of 25 for 354 yards, four touchdowns and one
interception. Seven different Raiders caught passes, including Pierre
Garcon, who scored twice, once on a 22-yard reception and once on a 13-yard
reverse.
The touchdown reception came early in the third stanza and was Garcon's 43rd
career scoring catch, tying him with Ohio Northern’s Steve Vagedes (1996-99)
for the Ohio Athletic Conference mark for career touchdown receptions.
Davis' touchdowns were from 22, 71 and 45 yards. The College of New Jersey heard a
lot about Nate Kmic and Garcon prior to the contest, but had to wonder who
this kid was. Well now they know. He is Mount Union's big play
receiver, averaging better than 20 yards per reception on the year.
Speaking of big plays, Daryl Ely opened the scoring by creating a one.
Mount Union was forced to punt following it first possession. Ely
raced downfield to tackle Zach Rinaldi on the punt return, stripped the ball
free, grabbed it out of the air, and raced untouched 28 yards to paydirt,
making it 7-0 three minutes into the game.
It was the Raiders fifth defensive touchdown this season. Ely later
intercepted a Chris James pass for his fourth pick of the year, which
leads the team. The
Purple & White finished plus-one in turnovers and are now +17 on the year.
Nate Kmic made it 14-0 just over two minutes later on a one-yard run. The junior's
second touchdown made it 21-7 with 8:53 remaining in the second quarter from
16 yards out. He finished with 68 yards on just 14 carries, an average
of 4.9 yards per rush. Nine different Raiders accounted for 181
rushing yards on 40 carries and three scores in the game.
Mount Union led 42-7 at halftime following Davis' first two touchdowns and Garcon's
scoring run, and
increased that to 59-7 through three periods. Garcon and Davis each
caught scoring tosses from Micheli in the third and Mike Zimmerman booted a
30-yard field goal.
The Raiders second team unit played most of the second half and there was
really very little drop off from what the first team accomplished.
Defensively, Troy Chaffin led the squad with six tackles, while Jonathan Andrews and Lambert Budzinski each had five. Patrick McCullough,
Joseph Millings and Chas Yoder all recorded quarterback sacks.
With the win,
Mount Union
will host St. John Fisher next week in the Regional Final. It is the
16th straight year the Purple Raiders advance to the quarterfinal round of
the NCAA Division III playoffs and it will be a rematch of last season's
National Semifinal won by Mount Union 26-14.
The Cardinals advance to next Saturday's game by defeating Curry 38-7 on
Saturday.
Kickoff from Mount Union Stadium is set for 12:00 p.m.
The winner advances to play the winner of the Region Final between
Bethel (MN) and Central (IA) the following Saturday for the right to play in
the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl on December 15th.
