Raiders hold Blue Streaks to minus two total yards in shutout win Mount Union defeated John Carroll 53-0 before 3,312 fans at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights Saturday, clinching the Ohio Athletic Conference championship for the 16th straight season. It is the 19th conference football championship overall for the Purple Raiders, with the first coming in 1985. Mount Union was dominant defensively, holding the Blue Streaks to minus 47 rushing yards and minus two total yards for the contest. It is the first time in my memory that a team finished an entire game with negative total yardage, at any level. The shutout marked the fifth consecutive game the Raiders have not allowed an opponent to score and the sixth overall this season, tying the Division III mark for shutouts in a season, set originally by Mount Union in 2003. The Purple & White's first team defense has allowed just a field goal all year. Mount Union ranked number one nationally entering the game in total offense, total defense, scoring offense and scoring defense, and did nothing to diminish those numbers against John Carroll, scoring on its first six possessions, and limiting the Streaks to two offensive snaps in Raider territory in the entire game. One of those plays came late in the second quarter, the other in the third. Both resulted in sacks back into Blue Streak territory, one for a loss of 12 yards, the other a loss of five, two of the eight Purple & White sacks in contest. Meanwhile, Mount Union's offense racked up 543 total yards. The Raiders had 26 first down, to four for John Carroll, scored on all seven trips into the redzone, converted on seven of 16 third downs and four of five fourth downs, while the Streaks were zero for 11 on third down and missed on its only fourth down try. The stats don't lie in this one. Mount Union was dominant in every phase of the game. The Raiders even won the turnover battle two to one and are now plus 12 heading into week 10. The Purple & White scored on its first possession for the eighth time in nine games when Nate Kmic galloped 35 yards for a score on the third snap from scrimmage. Kmic finished with 98 yards on 18 carries and scored two more times on runs of three and one yards in the second quarter. The junior running back also moved into second place in the OAC in career rushing yards and is now just 193 yards behind Marietta's Kenneth Sasu for first all-time, who ran for 4,727 yards from 1997 to 2000. Greg Micheli threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in completing 19 of 25 passes for 308 yards and no interceptions. The rushing score, from four-yards out late in the first period, made it 17-0. The touchdown passes went to Pierre Garcon, covering 65 yards, and Chad Reynolds, for four yards. Garcon led all receivers with seven catches for 103 yards. His touchdown was the 40th of his career at Mount Union, tying him with Adam Marino for the Purple Raider career record. He is now just three shy of the OAC mark of 43, currently held by Ohio Northern's Steve Vagedes from 1996-1999. Another record-setter in the game was Mike Zimmerman. He was perfect, kicking three field goals, from 24, 34 and 19 yards, and making all six extra point attempts. He has now been successful on 104 consecutive point after tries, breaking the mark of 102 held by Coe's Rims Roof (1983-85). Mount Union also recorded a safety when John Carroll quarterback Mark Petruziello was called for intentional grounding while in the endzone. Defensively, the Raiders were led by Matt Rees' 11 tackles, fumble recovery and two sacks. Pat McCullough had six tackles and one and a half sacks, while Matt Williamson recorded two sacks, and Troy Chaffin and Joseph Millings had one apiece, and Jonathan Andrews was credited with half a sack. Matt Kostelnik recorded his 10th career interception. Mount Union's first-team defense has allowed just a field goal all season. The Raiders have not allowed a point in 22 quarters and a touchdown in 28 quarters of play. The Purple & White improve to 9-0 on the season and 8-0 in conference play. Next week the Raiders host Marietta at Mount Union Stadium with a perfect regular season on the line. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. from Mount Union Stadium. The Pioneers enter the contest 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the OAC. Last year Mount Union beat Marietta 45-17, and have won 27 straight in the series dating back to the Pioneers last victory in 1977. Overall, the Purple Raiders own a 36-8-1 lead in the series.
