Raiders ground Bombers in first round playoff match-up
Nate Kmic ran for a season high
217 yards and scored four times in leading Mount Union to a 42-18 victory
over Ithaca before 1,822 fans at Mount Union Stadium Saturday in the
First Round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
But it wasn't
easy. The Raiders were in a battle for one of the few times this
season, and actually trailed for the first time in 2007.
Mount Union got
the opening kick but Greg Micheli's first pass attempt was
picked off, just his third interception year,
marking only the second time in 11 games that the Purple & White failed to
score a touchdown on its first possession this season.
The teams traded
possessions, each having it twice, before Ithaca scored the game's
first touchdown. The Bombers marched 65 yards in 10 plays and scored when Jamie Donovan leaped the line from one-yard out. Dillon
Dwyer's extra point attempt was blocked leaving it 6-0 with 3:34 left in the
first.
Ithaca's
touchdown was the first points allowed by the Raiders in the first period
this year and also marked the first touchdown surrendered by the first-team
defense.
That score
seemed to wake the sleeping giant. Mount Union needed only 91 seconds
to grab the lead when Kmic raced 48 yards to paydirt, capping a three-play,
57-yard drive with two minutes left in the
quarter. Mike Zimmerman
booted the extra point for a 7-6 lead.
Following a
Bomber punt to Mount Union's three, the Purple & White upped it to 14-6 when
Greg Micheli hit Pierre Garcon on a 40-yard catch and run, capping an
11-play, 97-yard march. It was a great play by Micheli, who doubled
pumped when he saw a lineman try to time his throw and bat it down, and then
he hit Garcon who got a step on the defense and raced untouched for a touchdown.
It looked like
it would be 21-6 at halftime when Kmic galloped 64 yards for his second
touchdown with just under a minute left in the half, but a penalty on the
extra point forced Zimmerman to kick off from his 15.
The result set
Ithaca up on Mount Union's 42 and it took them just three plays to
capitalize
when Dan Juvan hit Brian Weverbergh from five-yards out with 26 seconds
remaining. A two-point conversion pass failed, leaving it 21-12 Mount
Union at the break.
The Raiders had
a 290 to 166 advantage in total yards at halftime with the big difference in
rushing yards. The Purple & White ran for 165 yards on 15 attempts,
while the Bombers managed just eight yards on 15 totes.
Kmic did most of
his damage in the first half, rushing for 144 yards on 12 carries, a 12.0
yards per carry average, including two long touchdown runs.
Mount Union
pulled away in the third stanza with two more touchdowns. The Bomber's
had to punt after going three and out following the second half kick.
The Raiders went 65 yards in eight plays to make it 28-12 when Kmic scored
on a two-yard run.
It became 35-12
late in the period when Micheli found Bryson Davis for a seven-yard pass,
capping a six-play, 67-yard drive.
Ithaca
threatened to score twice in the third but big plays ended the threats.
The Bombers faced a fourth and one from Mount Union's 27 midway through the
quarter but Juvan was sacked by Matt Kostelnik and Pat McCullough for a loss
of six yards.
The next time
they had the ball, Ithaca drove 60 yards to the Raider five but Juvan's pass
to Dan Ross was intercepted at the three by Joseph Millings with under a
minute left in the third.
The teams traded
fourth quarter touchdowns. Juvan found Weverbergh from three yards out
for their second hookup of the day to cut it to 35-18 with 11:56 remaining.
Again, they attempted to go for two but the pass attempt failed. That
drive covered 50 yards in six plays.
Kmic then put
the final points on the board on a one-yard run following the kick,
finishing an eight-play, 65-yard march to make it 42-18.
Following that
touchdown, the Purple & White forced a three and out and then salted the
final 6:43 away with nine straight running plays, seven by Kmic and one each
from Trevor Bruney and Micheli.
Mount Union was
extremely balanced offensively, gaining 273 rushing and 270 passing yards
for a total of 543. Ithaca moved the ball through the air (324 yards)
but not on the ground (13 yards) and finished with 337.
Kmic moved
passed Marietta's Kenneth Sasu (1997-00), and into
first place on the all-time Ohio Athletic Conference career rushing list.
The junior now has 4,790 rushing yards. He also passed Chuck Moore's OAC mark for career touchdowns and now has 76.
Micheli completed 19 of 24 passes for
270 yards, two
touchdowns and one interception and added to Kmic's rushing total with nine
carries for 46 yards. After the interception he completed 19 of 23
passes.
Garcon
had six catches covering 107 yards and a touchdown.
Davis added 51 yards on four grabs and a score. Brandon Boehm had four
receptions for 40 yards and Justin Wray added three for 41.
McCullough led the way defensively, with
10 tackles, including a
sack. Tony DeRiggi and Matt Rees
each had a sack, while Nick Parr
recorded a sack and a half and Kostelnik was credited with half a sack. As a team, Mount
Union has recorded 48 quarterback sacks this year while allowing only 13.
The Purple
Raiders will face The College of New Jersey next Saturday at Mount Union Stadium in the
second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
The Lions came from behind with ten fourth quarter points, including a
27-yard field goal with 13 seconds remaining to defeat Rensselaer 17-14 Saturday to advance to the match-up in Alliance.
It will be the first meeting between the two schools.
Mount Union enters the contest riding the nation's longest winning
streak at 34 straight and are 11-0 this season, while New Jersey comes in
9-2 and champions of the New Jersey Athletic
Conference. Kickoff is set for 12:00
p.m.
