Raiders sack The 'Berg The Purple Raiders hit the road for the first time this season and downed the Heidelberg Student Princes 62-3 before 1200 fans at Frost-Kalnow Stadium in Tiffin, Ohio. The contest marked the first battle between Coach Larry Kehres and Coach Mike Hallett, a 1993 Mount Union College alum and All-American defensive end on Kehres’ first championship team. Though Kehres mentioned in the pregame that it’s no fun battling a dear friend on the football field, his team had little problem in dispatching the Student Princes. On the strength of an attacking defense which sacked The 'Berg quarterback Steve West eight times, the Raiders dominated on the field and on the scoreboard. Outside of surrendering a 24-yard field goal early in the second quarter, the first points scored on the number one unit this season, the defense completely dominated Heidelberg. The Student Princes could muster only 102 total yards on 53 offensive plays for a paltry 1.9 yards per play average. The rush defense continued its stellar play in stuffing The 'Berg ground game to minus nine yards on 37 carries (-0.2 yds/rush). Lost in the box score was the great decision making of West, a senior, who avoided numerous other sacks by throwing the ball away just as the Raider defenders arrived. Without his vision, Mount Union would have easily had a dozen or more sacks. Individually, the defense was led by senior defensive tackle Pat McCullough’s 11 tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks and one forced fumble. McCullough spent almost as much time in The 'Berg backfield as West did. Also playing a very good defensive game was senior linebacker Tony DeRiggi, who totaled seven tackles, two tackles for loss and one bone crushing sack. Offensively, the center of attention was Nate Kmic, entering the game only 112 yards behind Dan Pugh for the Mount Union career rushing record. It didn’t take Kmic long to get going as on the second offensive play for the Purple & White he scampered 49 yards for a touchdown on a delayed draw. By halftime, the junior All-American had more than covered the 112 yards needed by totaling 128 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries. The Mount Union passing game once again was a model of consistency as Greg Micheli hit on 13 of 17 passes for 196 yards, three touchdowns and most importantly no interceptions. Playing basically the first half of each of the first four games, Micheli has begun the season an astounding 56 of 67 for 865 yards, 10 touchdowns and no INT’s. After Micheli called it a day, Cecil Shorts stepped in and led the Raiders on an eight-play, 84-yard touchdown drive capped off by West Branch High School product Scott Thomas’ first career touchdown run from 14 yards out. Not to be out done, the special teams stepped up in the form of Matt Kostelnik’s sixth career blocked punt with 1:22 left in the second quarter that gave the Purple & White the ball at The 'Berg 14-yard line. The great field position resulted in Kmic’s fourth scoring run on a one-yard plunge. Similar to last week’s game against Muskingum, the Raider “O” was nearly unstoppable as they scored on 10 of their first 11 possessions and never punted. They continued to be balanced with 322 yards rushing and 248 yards passing (570 yards total) in totaling 30 first downs. By contrast, Heidelberg mustered only 102 yards of total offense and eight first downs. Though the scoreboard and box score might not show it, this Heidelberg squad is head and shoulders better than past teams from the last few years which can be directly attributed to Hallett and his staff. There’s no doubt that he has improved the play of the Student Princes and we’ll continue to see the level of play in Tiffin improve as he gets his players and staff in place. The climb out of the Ohio Athletic Conference cellar won’t be an easy one for Heidelberg, but the first steps have clearly been taken. With a perfect 4-0 record intact, Mount Union heads to Ada, Ohio next week to lock horns with the last OAC team to defeat the Raiders. Led by Mount Union College alum Dean Paul, the Ohio Northern Polar Bears are also 4-0 and currently ranked 11th in both national Division III polls. Unlike 2006 where Northern was decimated by key injuries, the Polar Bears are healthy and hungry for the ultimate challenge in trying to take down the Raiders. Kickoff from Dial-Roberson Stadium is set for 1:30 p.m. next Saturday.
