Top ranked Raiders shut down 12th rated Crusaders Mount Union limited Capital to just 92 total yards in blanking the Crusaders 37-0 before a standing room only crowd of 3,147 at Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus yesterday. The win clinches at least a share of a 16th straight Ohio Athletic Conference football championship for the Raiders, which has now won 19 football titles overall. After a scoreless first quarter, the Purple & White exploded for 23 points in the second stanza, led mainly by special teams play. Sam Kershaw partially blocked a Tom Gantner punt giving Mount Union terrific field position at the Capital 26 four minutes into the quarter. It took the Raiders just six plays to grab the lead when Nate Kmic scored from four-yards out to make it 7-0. Following another three and out by the Crusaders' offense, Gantner didn't have his punt blocked, but it was obvious he felt the pressure, which forced a high, short punt of just 21 yards to the 39. Five plays later, Kmic made it 14-0 on a beautiful 20-yard run. The next time Gantner went onto the field, his punt was completely blocked, by Matt Williamson this time, and the ball went out of the endzone, giving Mount Union a safety and a 16-0 lead. Justin Wray returned the ensuing free kick to the Raider 47 and the Purple & White offense went back to work, driving 53 yards in eight plays, culminating in a 23-0 lead when Greg Micheli hit Pierre Garcon for a touchdown from 23-yards out. Mount Union's offense was held to a season low 284 yards, but was efficient, converting on eight of 17 third down opportunities and both fourth down tries. The Raiders rushed for 166 yards against one of the nation's best rush defenses, and scored on all four trips into Capital's redzone. Meanwhile, the Purple & White defense was down right dominant. Capital managed just 92 total yards and had the ball in Mount Union territory only three times in the game. And get this, the first time came on its first snap from scrimmage following a fumble by Kmic on Mount Union's first offensive snap. That play resulted in a bad center/quarterback exchange and a fumble that was recovered by Patrick McCullough. The second trip into Raider territory happened later in the first quarter on a drive that began on the Crusaders' 49 and moved 18 yards to Mount Union's 33 before a Matt Spitz 51-yard field goal attempt was no good. The third and final march to Mount Union's side of the field came on Capital's last drive of the game against the second team defense in which the Crusaders picked up a third of its total yards in the contest and ended with the final whistle at the Raider 27. Wray set up the Purple & White's fourth touchdown with a 37-yard punt return to the Capital 23 in the third quarter. It took the Raiders six plays to go the distance, finished off by Kmic's third touchdown, this one from eight-yards out. Kmic finished with a game high 114 yards on 36 carries and three scores. His last score tied him with running back Chuck Moore’s (1998-2001) Mount Union record of 62 rushing scores. He also moved into third place all-time among OAC rushers and now needs just 292 yards to break Marietta running back Kenneth Sasu's career mark of 4,727 rushing yards (1997-2000). Greg Micheli completed 11 of 19 passes for 118 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He also rushed for 29 yards on eight carries. Pierre Garcon led all receives with five catches totaling 64 yards and one score. Trevor Bruney finished the scoring with just over four minutes remaining on a two-yard run. That drive covered 33 yards in eight plays and was set up on yet another Wray punt return, this one covering 36 yards. Wray finished with 115 all-purpose yards. The Purple Raiders have outscored their opponents 331-3 in the first half this season and have only allowed a field goal over the last six games. The shutout was Mount Union’s fifth of the season and fourth consecutive. The Raider defense has not allowed a point in 18 consecutive quarters and have not allowed a touchdown in 24. The NCAA Division III record for shutouts in a season is six which was set by Mount Union in 2003. The Raiders did fail to score a touchdown on its first possession for the first time this season, and did not score in the first period for the first time since the national championship game last year. Defensively, McCullough finished with a team high nine tackles, including four for loss, two sacks and a fumble recovery. Matt Rees chipped in with eight tackles, while Joseph Millings added six. James Herbert recorded a sack. The Purple & White have now won 65 consecutive road games dating back to 1994 and have 31 straight wins overall. The win snapped Capital’s 15-game home-winning streak and marked the first time the Crusaders have been shutout since a 19-0 defeat at Thiel in 1999. Mount Union improved to 8-0 overall, 7-0 in conference play, and have a two-game lead in the OAC with two games to play. Capital fell to 6-2 and 5-2 and will need to win out and hope things fall right for them to make the playoffs for a third consecutive season. The Purple Raiders will travel to John Carroll next Saturday. Last year Mount Union defeated the Blue Steaks 31-14 in Alliance and have won 17 straight in the series. Overall, the Raiders own a 20-2-2 mark. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Don Shula Stadium.
