Raiders rout Royals en route to 11th Stagg Bowl appearance Virginia, here we come! For the third consecutive year, and the 11th time in the last 15, Mount Union College will play in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the NCAA Division III football national championship. Their opponent in Salem, Virginia, for the third straight season, will be the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Purple Raiders defeated the Warhawks in each of the last two championship games, 35-28 in 2005 and 35-16 last December. Mount Union's opponent in the semifinals, Bethel University from Minnesota, planned on "punching Mount Union in the mouth" with a strong running game, according to its head coach Steve Johnson. But the Raiders took any blow Bethel may have thrown without wobbling on Saturday, scoring on all seven first half possessions to build a 41-0 halftime lead on the way to a 61-14 victory before 2,791 fans at Mount Union Stadium. Greg Micheli executed a perfect play-action fake on the third play from scrimmage and lofted a pass to a wide open Pierre Garcon for a 46-yard touchdown just 1:02 into the game, giving the Purple & White a lead it would never surrender. By the end of the quarter the Raiders had added 10 more points, on a Mike Zimmerman 21-yard field goal, and a seven-yard pass from Micheli to Chad Reynolds. The quick start propelled Mount Union to its 11th win in 15 semifinal contests. For the second week in a row, the home team totally dominated the opening period. The Raiders ran 20 plays for 151 yards to Bethel's 12 plays for minus-14 yards. Micheli was eight of nine for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns in the opening quarter. It was 21-0 after one in last week's quarterfinals against St. John Fisher. This week it was 17-0, with Mount Union threatening for more as the period ended. Two plays into the second stanza it became 24-0 when Nate Kmic scored his first of three touchdowns on a two-yard run. The junior tallied 104 yards rushing on 19 carries and is now 14th on the all-time Division III football career rushing list with 5,163 yards. After Zimmerman's season long 37-yard field goal made it 27-0, Mount Union added two more touchdowns before intermission. Kmic scored on a 10-yard run, capping a seven-play, 73-yard drive in which he accounted 61 of the yards with carries of two, three, 34, 12 and 10 yards in the series. But the backbreaker for Bethel, and what got Mount Union fans planning a trip south for next weekend, was a left-right combination (to borrow an analogy from Johnson) late in the half. First Craig Nickoli intercepted a Dan Einerson pass on the 14 to end what had been the Royals best drive of the game (11-plays, 48-yards) with 2:11 remaining. Then Mount Union, rather than run out the clock deep in its own territory with a 34-0, threw the knockout punch. The Raiders marched 86-yards in 7 plays to make it 41-0 when Micheli scampered in from eight-yards out. The big plays on this drive came from Justin Wray, who caught two Micheli passes for 37 and 26 yards. At halftime, Mount Union had 326 yards of offense, 209 passing and 117 rushing, to Bethel's 65 total yards, of which 48 came on its last possession that ended in the Nickoli's interception. Bethel, which needed to keep its offense on the field with time consuming drives, ended the half having the ball for more than four minutes less than Mount Union did. And because they were a run first offense that set up the pass off of the run, a 41-point deficit was not something they were going to be able to overcome. The only scoring in the third quarter was a six-yard run by Kmic that capped a five-play, 80-yard drive. Garcon's 43-yard reception was the big play. The senior wideout finished with five reception for 111 yards is now the career reception leader at Mount Union with 198, breaking Adam Marino's mark of 197 (1997-00). Each team scored twice in the fourth quarter. Nickoli intercepted his second pass of the day and returned it 20 yards to make it 55-0 and Cecil Shorts scampered 28 yards for a touchdown from the quarterback spot, marking his second rushing score of the season and fifth overall. Bethel's scoring came on Einerson passes to Nick Otto and Jared Bangs, the first in the middle of the fourth quarter and the second in the final minute of play. Mount Union was very balanced in its attack, running for 233 yards and passing for 260, totaling 493 yards, to Bethel's 297, of which 161 came in the final period. Micheli finished 16 of 19 for 258 of the passing yards. Defensively, Brandon Mack's 11 tackles led the way, while Tony DeRiggi and Jonathan Andrews each chipped in with nine. The Raiders finished +1 in turnovers and are now +18 on the year, as Patrick McCullough recovered a fumble to go along with Nickoli's two interceptions. Nicholi's interceptions were the first of his career and his return for a score was the team's seventh defensive touchdown this season. Mount Union and Whitewater return to Salem, Virginia for the third consecutive year. The Warhawks advance with a 16-7 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday. The Purple Raiders will be looking for their 10th national championship while Whitewater is after its first. This will be a rematch of the last two title games, both won by Mount Union.
