Purple Raider defense takes the sting out of visiting Yellow Jackets When Mount Union and Baldwin-Wallace get together, you can typically expect a low-scoring, defensive struggle. The Yellow Jackets have held the Purple Raiders to their lowest single-game scoring output in four of the last six seasons when including playoff results, and five of the last six regular seasons. As final scores go, the 35-0 win by the Raiders before 6,322 fans at Mount Union on Homecoming weekend was a very comfortable margin of victory. As documented by the last six meetings, all Purple & White wins by final scores of 14-0 last year, 17-3 in '05, 24-7 in '04, 24-0 in '03, 28-21 in '02 and 17-3 in '01, Baldwin-Wallace has, in a time when the Raiders have for the most part dominated opponents, found a way to be very competitive every single year. What is confusing, is why the Yellow Jackets have been unable to find that level of play each and every week, as they have managed to finish as high as second in the Ohio Athletic Conference just once over that stretch and find themselves well back in the pack at 4-3 this season. On the other hand, Mount Union's defense has been down right dominant against the Jackets and for the most part, everyone. In looking at the scores of the last six B-W meetings, aside from the 2002 game that finished 28-21, Baldwin-Wallace has managed just 13 points in the other six games against the Raiders, including three shutouts. The Jackets moved the ball well at times yesterday, but were unable to dent the scoreboard. They moved inside Mount Union's redzone four times but came up empty on each, missing two field goals (one was blocked), losing a fumble and turning it over on downs. In addition, the Yellow Jackets moved deep into Raider territory on three other occasions but came up empty turning the ball over on downs each time. B-W finished just two of 15 on third down conversions and one for five on fourth down tries in the game. In posting a shutout, the Purple & White pushed their string of not allowing a point to 14 quarters. They have surrendered just one field goal over the last five games and no touchdowns in 20 quarters going back to the fourth quarter in week two against Otterbein. For the seventh time in seven games this season, Mount Union scored on its first possession. Justin Wray capped a nine-play, 63-yard march with a three-yard run, giving the Raiders all the points it would need just 3:07 into the contest. Following a B-W punt, Mount moved to the Yellow Jackets' five on its second possession, but Greg Micheli's pass intended for Wray was tipped and intercepted by Ryan Clokey on the goal line. The interception was Micheli's first this year. He would throw a second in the third quarter and finish 19 of 28 for 154 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also had 46 rushing yards on nine carries. Nate Kmic led the ground game with 113 yards on 26 carries. Pierre Garcon, playing for the first time in three weeks, rushed four times for 32 yards and led the receiving corp. with seven catches totaling 58 yards. The senior wide out scored Mount Union's second touchdown on a 15-yard end around with 9:35 remaining in the second quarter. That score capped a 13-play, 79-yard drive. The Raiders came right back the next time they had the ball, moving 59 yards in seven plays when Micheli found tightend Chad Reynolds from four-yards out to make it 21-0. Then with just over three minutes remaining before intermission, James Herbert stepped in front of a Mickey Mental pass at midfield and raced 50 yards untouched to paydirt, giving the Purple & White a 28-0 halftime advantage. It was Herbert's second touchdown this season, as he also returned a blocked punt for a score against Averett. The only scoring in the second half came early in the fourth quarter when Micheli hit Garcon for a four-yard score. That touchdown capped a 15-play, 74-yard drive that took 8:28 off the clock. Defensively, Tony DeRiggi and Patrick McCullough led the Raiders with seven tackles apiece. Joseph Millings, Nick Parr and Matt Williamson each recorded a sack, while Craig Nickoli recovered a fumble forced by Millings and Hebert and Jonah Wilson had interceptions. Mount Union finished with 384 total yards to 228 for Baldwin-Wallace. The Yellow Jackets had one pass play cover 72 yards in the first quarter which marked the single biggest gain on a play against the Raiders this season. The Purple & White dominated on the ground, picking up 224 yards to 75 for B-W. With the win, the Raiders improve to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in conference play and will travel to Capital next week. The Crusaders lost for the first time yesterday and will look to get the monkey off its back against the Raiders as Mount Union has won 21 straight over the Crusaders, including four wins in the last two years, and own a 29-12 mark in the overall series. The Purple & White can clinch a share of the OAC title with a win over Capital. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. from Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus.
