Mount Union 35 Whitewater 16 by Ric Brienza |
Mount Union defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the second consecutive season, claiming a second straight national championship and ninth overall.
The Raiders outscored the Warhawks 21-3 in the second half for a 35-16 win in front of 6,051 fans at Salem Stadium in Salem, Virginia. The Purple & White became the first team in NCAA Division III football history to win 15 games in a single season, finishing a prefect 15-0.
Quarterback Greg Micheli was named the game's Most Outstanding Player after throwing for 202 yards and rushing for 42 more. The sophomore threw for three touchdowns and ran for one in breaking the Stagg Bowl record for completion percentage (.818) by hitting on 18 of 22 passes.
Mike Jorris did not complete a pass in limited duty after throwing for 246 yards in last year's championship game. He struggled late in the season due to a nerve injury in his throwing arm and tendinitis in his shoulder and was never able to regain his throwing touch during the playoff run.
Just like last year, the Raiders outscored the Warhawks 14-0 in a decisive third quarter. The two teams battled to a draw through most of the period until Mount Union took over after a punt at its own 19 with 6:56 remaining. The Purple & White began to take control in the game when they marched 81 yards in five plays in 1:26 to increase the lead to 21-13.
They came out throwing in the drive, a 15-yard pass to Anthony Antonucci, a 17-yarder to Justin Wray, a Nate Kmic rush for three and an incompletion set up third and seven at the Whitewater 46. Micheli then hit Pierre Garcon for his first of two second half scores, a short pass in which the junior wideout took to the house for a 46-yard touchdown.
The second blow of the quarter came following the Warhawks next possession. Matt Kostelnik blocked Nick Croak's punt, Matt Ress scooped up the loose ball and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown less than three minutes later. It marked the fifth special teams touchdown and eighth non-offensive touchdown on the season.

After a Whitewater field goal early in the fourth, Micheli and Garcon hooked up again on a 10-yard touchdown with 10:59 remaining in what would be the final points of the game. Much was made in the week leading up to the contest of Garcon's broken hand, but the junior led all receivers with eight catches covering 116 yards and two touchdowns. In two Stagg Bowl's, Garcon has 15 receptions for 223 yards and four scores.
You can't underestimate how much the defense meant to this championship. The number one ranked defense in the nation played well, shutting the door numerous times on the Whitewater offense. Four times the Warhawks entered the redzone but could only manage 16 points on three field goals and a touchdown. And the touchdown came off a four-yard drive set up by a long kickoff return.
Justin Beaver's longest run was for 14 yards. The longest play for Whitewater from
scrimmage came on a pass from Justin Jacobs to Derek Stanley covering 22 yards.
Beaver finished with 87 yards rushing on 23 carriers, while Jacobs completed just 12 of 27
passes for 148 yards and was sacked twice. He scored the Warhawks lone touchdown on
a one-yard sneak in the second
Whitewater got the only points of the first quarter on a 25-yard field goal from Jeff Schebler. It marked the first time the Raiders trailed all season. The Purple & White seemed to have the better of the opening period, but a fumble, costly penalties and a bad call on a Garcon catch that was ruled incomplete kept Mount Union off the scoreboard.
Micheli led two touchdown drives in the second stanza. The first was an eight-play, 62-yard drive cumulating in a two-yard pass to Antonucci for a 7-3 lead the Raiders would never relinquish. After forcing a Whitewater punt the Purple & White immediately made it 14-3 on a 12-yard keeper by Micheli. That touchdown drive covered 72 yards and took 10 plays with the big play a 13-yard pass from Micheli to Terrance Morring out of the backfield on fourth and one from the Whitewater 33. The Raiders scored two plays later.
Jordan Wells returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards to the four, setting up the Warhawks lone touchdown.
Running back Nate Kmic set a new Mount Union single-season record with 2,365 yards
rushing, surpassing the old mark of 2,303
Sam Vucelich led the defense with seven tackles, while Nick Barren and Jonah Wilson each had six. Nick Parr and Rees recorded sacks. Mount Union finished with 363 yards of total offense to Whitewater's 235. The Purple Raiders converted on eight of 15 third down opportunities, while the Warhawks made just three of 14, including zero of five in the first half.
The Raiders defense did not allow more than 17 points in a game all season. The win is Mount Union's ninth in 10 Stagg Bowl appearances. The nine national championships by the Purple Raiders are the most at any level in college football history.
