Mount Union had a check list of things to be concerned with heading into its second round playoff match-up with Wheaton (IL). First-Team All-College Conference of Wisconsin and Illinois running back Chaz Black, an Ohio native, was a 1,000 yard rusher. Quarterback Jeremy Chupp was a three-year starter with almost 2,000 passing yards. Andy Studebaker, the junior defense end named CCIW Defensive Player of the Year, led the nation in sacks with 17.5 and tackles for loss with 24.5.
Then you factor in this being Wheaton's fifth trip to Alliance with the previous four ending in losses and you wonder how many times can you you beat a very good team and program before finally stumbling?
On the other hand, Wheaton had its concerns as well. In a nutshell it knew it would need to shut down Mount Union's vaunted running game, not turn the ball over and play a near perfect game in order to leave Alliance with its first win.
Black ran for 70 yards, which was the single best rushing day against the
Raiders defense this season. But he needed 28 carries to do so,
averaging just 2.5 yards per carry, which was less than half his season
Meanwhile, the Thunder allowed 397 rushing yards and finished minus three in turnover margin for the game. Mount Union's defense picked off five passes as the Purple & White won 35-3 and sent Wheaton home winless in five trips now to Mount Union Stadium. The Thunder is 0-5 against the Raiders in playoff action and 6-0 against everybody else.
Sophomore running back Nate Kmic electrified the 3,124 fans at Mount Union Stadium with a 52-yard touchdown run on Mount Union's first possession, giving the Purple & White all the points they would need. Kmic carried on all three plays for 61 yards, averaging 20.3 yards per carry on the drive. He finished averaging a staggering 10.1 yards per carry against a rush defense that had allowed just 80 yards per game coming in.
At halftime Kmic accounted for 156 of the Raiders 166 rushing yards on the
way to finishing with a game
His second score came on a 28-yard run with a minute remaining in the first quarter, capping a seven-play, 80-yard drive. Mount Union carried the 14-0 lead into the locker room because of two big interceptions deep in Purple Raider territory that kept Wheaton off the scoreboard.
The Thunder punted on four of six first half possessions, but threatened to score on the other two, moving the ball more than 50 yards each time. An interception by Jonah Wilson on the goal line in the first quarter, and one by Daryl Ely at the 14 in the second stanza ended the two opportunities the Thunder had in the first half.
After Wheaton finally got on the scoreboard with a field goal five minutes into the
third quarter, Mount Union responded by driving 75 yards in four plays with
Greg Micheli going untouched 22-yards on a quarterback keeper two minutes
later. That score made it 21-3 through three periods and pretty much

The Raiders added two fourth quarter scores, a 13-yard pass from Mike Jorris to Pierre Garcon and a one-yard plunge by Kmic. Three second half interceptions, Wilson's second of the game, and one each by Tony DiRiggi and Chas Yoder, helped keep Wheaton out of the endzone.
Jorris and Micheli combined to finish six of 14 passing for 95 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Garcon had three catches for 67 yards and one score while Kmic had two grabs totaling 24 yards.
Defensively, Anthony Ursetti led the team with seven tackles, while Nick Barren, Matt Kostelnik, Matt Rees, Justen Stickley and Wilson each had six. DeRiggi and Stickley each recorded quarterback sacks.
Mount Union finished with 492 yards, 397 on the ground and 95 through the
air. Wheaton garnered 287 total yards, 216 via the passing game and
only 71 on the ground. The Purple Raiders averaged 8.9 yards per play,
including 9.7 yards per rush, while the Thunder managed 4.1 yards per play.
With the win, Mount Union will host Capital next week in quarterfinal playoff action. It is the 15th straight year the Purple Raiders advance to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III playoffs and will be a rematch of last season's Regional Final won by Mount Union 34-31.
The Crusaders advance to next Saturday's game by defeating North Central (IL) 41-13 on Saturday. Five weeks ago Mount Union jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead and defeated Capital 32-12 during the regular season. It was the Raiders 20th straight victory over their conference rival. Kickoff from Mount Union Stadium on Saturday is set for 12:00 noon. The winner advances to play the winner of the East Region final between Rowan and St. John Fisher.
