Kmic scored all three of the Purple Raiders' touchdowns and averaged 8.8 yards per carry. The biggest drive of all began on Fisher's 20-yard line following a blocked field goal. Justen Stickley got a hand on Chris Pierri's 33-yard attempt that would have cut Mount Union's lead to two in the fourth quarter.
Up 19-14 with 8:04 to play, the Raiders marched for a touchdown on a nine-play, 80-yard drive, each play a run by Kmic. His carries broke down like this: 5, 33, 8, 1, 8, 8, 7, 5, and 5. The final five yards gave Kmic his third touchdown and gave the Purple & White a 12 point lead with 5:56 remaining. Mount Union needed only to convert one third down on the drive and that was for one yard. The Cardinals knew Kmic was getting the ball, they just couldn't stop him.

All told, the Raiders had the ball twice in the fourth quarter. All 16 plays were rushes by Kmic, producing 109 yards, 8:23 off the clock and a touchdown. Ball game! Salem, Virginia here we come!
For the 10th time in the last 14 seasons, the Purple & White get to play for a national championship. They will be going for their ninth title Saturday against Wisconsin-Whitewater in a rematch of last year's Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, won by Mount Union 35-28.
Kmic's first touchdown opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game and came on his first carry. The 64-yard scoring jaunt capped a three-play, 73-yard drive that set the tone for what was to come. By the end of the day the sophomore out of Delta High School carried 42 times and now has 2,254 rushing yards for the season. A 100-yard rushing effort in the title game would give him the best rushing season by any back in the history of Mount Union football.
After the teams traded scores the defenses controlled the rest of the half. The only other points came via a botched punt attempt by Fisher at the 9:30 mark of the second quarter. With the line of scrimmage at the Fisher 18, a high snap sailed over punter Ricky Tatar's head and through the back of the endzone.
A turnover ended the only other scoring opportunity for either team prior to intermission. From Fisher's 24, Greg Micheli found Justin Wray for a first down to the 14 but the junior tailback lost the ball as he hit the ground and it was recovered by the Cardinals' Scott Miranto. That would be the only turnover in the contest.
Mount Union made it 16-7 at the 8:54 mark of the third stanza on a 24-yard run by
Kmic. That run capped an eight-play, 56-yard
But just as they had done after the Raiders first touchdown, the Cardinals answered. Mark Robinson had his best drive of the game, accounting for 44 of the 75 yards, including a 39-yard run, the longest against the Purple & White this year. Still it was not easy. After having first and goal from the one, it took four plays to get in the endzone, becoming a two-point game again at 16-14 with five minutes left in the third. Robinson finished with 110 yards on 28 carries, becoming the first back to run for 100 yards against Mount Union this season.
Mount Union responded with a 75-yard drive that resulted in a 25-yard Mike Zimmerman field goal on the final play of the the third quarter. Kmic again was most of the offense, carrying five times for 68 yards on the nine-play drive. 238 of his 371 yards came in the second half.
Jorris and Micheli combined to complete eight of 14 passes for 51 yards. Kramer threw for 145 for Fisher. But there were two teams that pride themselves on running the football. And in this semifinal, one did it much better than the other. And ultimately, that was the difference in the outcome.
The Purple & White finished with 429 yards and averaged 6.6 yards per play. The Cardinals managed 222 at a 3.8 yards per clip. Kmic is the first to credit his offensive line as a big reason he runs like he does. Fisher echoed that after the game, saying this was the best offensive line they had ever faced.
Defensively, Sam Vucelich led the Raiders with 11 tackles and three sacks. Stickley added two sacks and a blocked field goal attempt and Nick Parr recorded a sack.
Mount Union and Whitewater return to Salem, Virginia for the second consecutive year. The Warhawks advance with a 44-7 win over Wesley on Saturday. Both teams are unbeaten and will enter the championship contest with identical 14-0 records.
Mount Union will be looking for its ninth national championship while Whitewater is after its first. The Purple Raiders defeated the Warhawks 35-28 in last year's title game. The contest will be broadcast live from Salem Stadium in Salem, Virginia on ESPN with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.

Mount Union running back Nate Kmic broke his own school record with 371 rushing yards in
the Purple Raiders 24-16 victory over St. John Fisher Saturday before 3,532 fans at Mount
Union Stadium in the national semifinals.
