Mount Union jumped out to a four touchdown lead Saturday night in Westerville before all of the 3,317 fans in attendance could find their seats enroot to a 71-14 victory over Otterbein. The Purple & White scored four quick touchdowns in the first quarter as Matt Kostenlik produced two scores, first on a fumble recovery in the endzone following a botched punt attempt by the Cardinals, and the second just ten seconds later on a 24-yard interception return. The junior now has four career touchdowns as he scored last year on a fumble recovery and a blocked punt return. Mount Union's first score came on its second play from scrimmage just 2:08 into the game when Mike Jorris found Pierre Garcon in the endzone following a 27-yard drive that was set up by a short Otterbein punt and 13-yard return by Brandon Boehm. After the two Kostelnik touchdowns, another two-play drive, this one from 75 yards,
made it 27-0 when Justin Wray grabbed a Jorris pass and raced 67 yards to
pay dirt. Jorris had a tremendous first half, He connected with Garcon for another six-pointer two minutes into the second quarter after Otterbein's nice looking freshman running back, Dan Gendron, scored on a three-yard run. The second scoring toss to Garcon came on Mount Union's first play from scrimmage following the kickoff and covered 82 yards. Garcon is picking up right where he left off from a year ago when he recorded nine receptions of 40 yards or greater and 16 touchdowns. Through two games the junior has four touchdowns, including one from 73 yards in the opener and the 82 yarder against the Cardinals. What turned out
to be Otterbein's final score of the night made it 34-14 with 9:31 remaining
in the first half when Paul Stelzer
found Scott DeLong in the endzone on a fourth down play from the eight-yard
line. The drive was set up when Nate Kmic fumbled at the Mount Union
30-yard line. The Raiders countered with what turned out to be their only sustained drive of the game, an 11-play, 75-yard march that took 5:09 off the clock and culminated in a five-yard pass from Jorris to Terrance Morring. Two big plays on the drive were a 37-yard pass to Boehm and an eight-yard quarterback scamper on third and six to the Otterbein 14. Otterbein had an 11-minute advantage in time of possession in the first half and ran 47 plays compared to Mount Union's 21, but the Raiders averaged 13.9 yards per play in producing a 41-14 advantage at the intermission. The Purple & White added to their lead 3:44 into the third quarter when Kmic brought back memories of his electrifying 95-yard touchdown run in last year's Stagg Bowl with an 80-yard touchdown. Kmic finished with 135 rushing yards on 11 carries (12.3 ypc). After three
periods it was 55-14 as Maxwell Smith accounted for the other score on a
35-yard pass play where Jorris found the senior at the five-yard line after
scampering out of trouble and hitting the wideout on Mount Union added 17 fourth quarter points on a 32-yard run by Greg Micheli, a 41-yard run by Wray and a 38-yard field goal by Dan Diemert. The Raiders finished with 663 total yards compared to 224 for the Cardinals. The Purple Raiders averaged 12.5 yards per play in the game. Jorris finished 12 of 22 passing for 317 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. Garcon finished with six receptions for 152 yards and two scores, while Justin Wray recorded a combined 130 rushing / receiving yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Kostelnik recorded four tackles and recovered a fumble to go along with his interception and two touchdowns. Nick Barren and Jonah Wilson also had interceptions while Caleb Jones recovered a fumble.
Mount Union finished plus three in the turnover battle and is now plus seven on the season. The last time a Purple Raider team won the turnover battle but lost the game was during the 1995 playoffs against Wis-Whitewater. The last time it happened in the regular season was all the way back in 1990. Mount Union improves to 2-0 on the season, 1-0 in conference play. Next week the Raiders travel to New Concord to play Muskingum with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. at McConagha Stadium. The Muskies are the only conference team that does not have a losing record against the Purple & White as the longtime series stands at 29 wins apiece with two ties. Last year Mount Union defeated Muskingum 45-0, and has won 17 straight in the series dating back to a tie in 1988. The last time Muskingum defeated Mount Union was 1984.
