Emotions were high. Two nationally ranked teams. Standing room only crowd of 6,832 fans in Alliance. Mount Union and Ohio Northern. The Polar Bears had ended the Purple Raiders record 110 regular season win streak the year before. They thought they'd do it again. Their quarterback, Adam Quirk, spent as much time early on cheerleading to the fans as he did throwing passes. This is an emotional game and Mount Union did a much better job channeling theirs. It was 14-0 after one quarter, 21-7 at halftime. Then it really got ugly. Mount Union pounded the football in the third quarter. Nothing fancy. We're running at you. Try and stop us. Northern couldn't. Six seconds into the fourth quarter 28 more points had been scored. The Polar Bears had given up just 30 all year. Most of the yardage came on the ground. Nate Kmic ran for over 200 yards himself. That's more rushing yards than ONU had given up coming in. The final was
49-7 and it could have been worse. Mount Union brought out the "lets
just end the game" offense early in the fourth quarter. It's last
drive ended with a run up the middle on fourth and long in Northern's red
zone or the Raiders would have scored more than 50 for the fifth straight
game. But the first four came against second division teams.
This was Ohio Northern. Ranked ninth in one national poll, 10th in the
other. This was a shock. And it was very, very impressive. At the end the Polar Bears nationally ranked defense looked like any other. They had no answer for Mount Union's running game and Jason Trusnik, the All-American defensive end that has rewritten the record books, was a non-factor. R.J Meadows, the leading running back in the Ohio Athletic Conference, averaging better than 130 yards per game, finished with 13 yards on eight carries. His longest run of the day was for six yards and he fumbled on his first carry. Mount Union opened the scoring on a 10-yard run by Kmic. It capped an eight-play, 71-yard drive that began when Matt Kostelnik intercepted a Quirk pass at the Raider 12. Kostelnik had a second interception in the third quarter and now has three on the year to lead the team. Mount Union recorded four turnovers on the day and did not give up the ball once. They are now +15 in turnover margin through five games. The second score
came after a huge special teams play. Kostelnik blocked a Polar Bear's
punt and the ball was recovered by Alex Jamison who returned it four yards
to the one. It was Northern's third blocked punt of the season and you
just knew Mount Union would be going after one. Kostelnik had a lot of
help because it looked like the entire Mount Union special team unit was in the backfield
on the play. Three plays later Mike Jorris hit Pierre Garcon for a touchdown. Garcon had a wonderful afternoon, catching ten balls for 105 yards and two scores, and taking an end around 31 yards for another touchdown. He has now scored 11 touchdowns on the year. At this point to say Mount Union's defense was taking over would be an understatement. Northern went three and out on four straight possessions and Quirk spent as much time picking himself up off the ground as he did looking for an open receiver. He was sacked three times for a loss of 26 yards, and was hurried on just about every pass attempt. Garcon's end around made it 21-0 with six minutes left in the first half. It capped a four-play, 43-yard drive that was set up by a short Polar Bear punt. Northern got on
the board before halftime on a 14-yard pass from Quirk to Alan Strange.
It capped an eight-play, 63-yard drive. Ohio Northern really took
momentum into the locker room as Mount Union threatened to score again late
in the half but were unable to stop the clock at the Northern 18 after a
quarterback sack. But that momentum was left in the locker room as it
was all Mount Union in the second half. At halftime Northern had seven first downs. They finished with eight. They had two rushing yards and finished with 15. They had 94 total yards at the intermission and finished with 121. They picked up 27 yards in the entire second half. Simply amazing. Mount Union picked up 137 of its 325 yards on the ground in the third quarter. The Raiders ran 15 plays in the period and 12 were on the ground, resulting in three touchdowns. A 16-yard run by Kmic made it 28-7, a 12-yard pass from Jorris to Terrance Morring upped it to 35-7, and maybe the most electric play of the season increased it to 42-7. Kmic took a handoff on the Northern 40, immediately bounced off one defender, spun out of the tackle of another, and then raced 40 yards down the home sideline for the touchdown. Ballgame! The final score came on the first play of the fourth quarter, a 14-yard pass from Greg Micheli to Garcon. Jorris and Micheli combined to complete 12 of 25 passes for 138 yards and three scores. Mike Zimmerman made all seven extra point attempts and is now 37 for 38 on the year. Coming in Ohio
Northern had given up an average of 145 yards per game. Mount Union
had allowed 150. The Purple Raiders managed better than three times
that with 463 total yards while Northern totaled just 121. Defensively, Matt Rees led the Raiders with six tackles. Patrick McCullough, Justen Stickley and Rees accounted for the three sacks. Troy Chaffin and Stickley each recovered a fumble, while Kostelnik had the two interceptions and blocked punt. Mount Union moves to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play with the win. The Purple Raiders travel to Wilmington next Saturday. The Quakers will enter the contest 2-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play following their 38-7 victory over Otterbein. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. from Williams Stadium. Ohio Northern drops to 4-1 and 3-1 and will have to regroup in a hurry as it has unbeaten Capital next week.
