Mount Union 62 Muskingum 0 by Ric Brienza |
Mount Union set a school and conference record by scoring 42 points in the first quarter Saturday on its way to a 62-0 win over Muskingum in front of 1,894 fans at McConagha Stadium in New Concord. The 42-point outburst breaks the mark of 41 points scored by the Purple Raiders in the second quarter at Defiance in 1996. The shutout of the Muskies also extends the streak to 15 seasons in which the defense has posted at least one shutout going back to 1991. There were not a lot of overwhelming individual numbers in the game as most of the starters in particular played little more than a quarter. Mike Jorris completed four of five passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Both scores went to Pierre Garcon, who had two catches totaling 22 yards. Jorris has now thrown 12 touchdowns and just one interception in the first three contests, while Garcon has 15 receptions and six touchdowns. The Purple &
White scored six touchdowns in the first quarter but the play that got them
going was a third and long on the opening possession. Jorris connected
with Anthony Antonucci on a 26-yard pass play The Raiders doubled the lead just 13 seconds later when Chas Yoder recovered a Caleb Fuller fumble on the ensuing kickoff and raced 15 yards untouched to paydirt. Its the second week in a row Mount Union has scored a special teams touchdown on a fumble return. It became 21-0 just 5:43 into the game when Jorris connected with Garcon from 11 yards out. The two-play, 16-yard drive was set up when Anthony Ursetti recovered a Steve Howard fumble. The Muskies fumbled six times, losing four in the game. The Raiders are now +11 in turnover ratio after a plus four performance in New Concord. The Purple &
White needed just three plays the next time they had the ball to make it
28-0 following a blocked punt by Chris Kappas. The Raiders
traveled 35 yards, the final 16 on a Greg Micheli to Justin
Wray pass play. Micheli finished 13 of 16 for 151 yards with one touchdown passing and one rushing. It was the sophomore's first throwing touchdown of the season and his third rushing score. Wray, who has quickly become quite the all-purpose back, finished with three rushes for 25 yards and two catches for 24. His five touchdowns on the season are second behind only Garcon's six. The Muskies fumbled the kickoff again and Jonathan Previlon made a great recovery as the ball was sailing out of bounds. Mount Union needed just two plays to go 26 yards as Jorris and Garcon hooked up for the final time on the day on an 11-yard score. The final touchdown of the record setting quarter came after yet another Muskingum fumble, recovered by Patrick McCullough at the Muskie 25. Three plays later Wray scored from three-yards out and with 50 seconds still to play in the opening period it was 42-0. The only scoring in the second stanza came on a Mike Zimmerman 20-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining. That capped a 10-play, 68-yard march to end a quarter in which it seemed Larry Kehres was content on working on his offensive and getting valuable playing time for numerous underclassmen.
The Raiders scored twice in the third quarter on Micheli's six-yard run and a 18-yard interception return by Chris Kappas. That play marked the second straight week in which Mount Union's defense has scored a touchdown. The only fourth quarter scoring came when Zimmerman booted a 21-yard field goal with 9:37 remaining. Zimmerman was a perfect two for two in field goal attempts and eight for eight in extra point tries and is now 23 for 24 in PAT's and four for four in field goals on the season. Defensively, Mount Union was led by Tony DeRiggi's seven tackles. The Raiders limited Muskingum to just three of 17 on third down tries and recorded five sacks on the day. Mount Union finished with 455 yards of total offense, an average of 7.8 yards per play, while the Muskies managed just 94 yards, an 1.8 average per play.
The Purple & White were eight for eight in red zone scoring chances while
the closest Muskingum got to scoring was in the second quarter following a
Mount Union fumble on its own 25. But after losing 13 yards in three
plays, Muskingum had to punt from Mount Union's 38. The Purple Raiders improved to 3-0 with the win, 2-0 in conference play. Mount Union finally plays a home game next Saturday when it entertains Heidelberg on M-Club and Family Night at Mount Union Stadium with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. Heidelberg enters the contest 0-3 and currently has the nation's longest losing streak at 29 straight games dating back to a win over Marietta in week four of the 2003 season.
