School record 503 rushing yards pushes Raiders to win over Pioneers Mount Union set a school record with 503 rushing yards in defeating Marietta 45-17 Saturday before 975 fans at Don Drumm Stadium in Marietta. The Purple Raiders averaged 7.7 yards per carry and finished with 587 total yards while limiting the Pioneers to 235. Both teams played in a steady rain most of the game, which was a major reason why Mount Union ran the ball 65 times while only throwing it 15. The Purple Raiders jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead with two short drives. The first, a seven-play, 43-yard march came via Nate Kmic's legs as the sophomore got things going with a 47-yard return off the opening kickoff to Marietta's 43 and carried the ball on each play, the final a one-yard run making it 7-0 less than four minutes into the game. Tony DeRiggi intercepted Jason Vrable on the Pioneer's third play from scrimmage and returned it 11 yards to the 34 setting the Raiders up for their second score. It took the Purple & White six plays, the final a nine-yard pass from Greg Micheli to Pierre Garcon midway through the first period. Marietta stormed back with ten straight points to end the quarter at 14-10. A 30-yard Pat Lane field goal and a 15-yard run from Garrett Banks accounted for the scoring. The touchdown drive was set up when Lonnie Myers intercepted Mike Jorris' pass and returned it 35 yards to the Mount Union 30. It was just Jorris' fourth interception this season and the touchdown run marked only the second rushing touchdown allowed by the Raiders defense and the first since week two against Otterbein. Mount Union squelched any home town hopes of an upset with 17 unanswered second quarter points to open up a 31-10 halftime lead. Kmic scored on another one-yard run, capping a 10-play, 77-yard drive immediately after the Pioneers closed to within four. Justin Wray then scampered in from 15 yards out and Mike Zimmerman booted an 18-yard field goal to account for the scoring. At halftime the Purple & White had 307 total yards, all but 22 coming on the ground. Kmic rushed for 175 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns and his day was done. Add in one reception for seven yards and three kickoff returns totaling 80 and he accounted for 262 all-purpose yards in two quarters. Mount Union added two scores in the third stanza, an end around from Garcon for a 27-yard touchdown and a 27-yard run from Wray. For the regular season, Garcon scored 13 receiving touchdowns, two more rushing scores and he threw for one more. Wray finished the day with a career high 189 yards rushing on 19 carries and two touchdowns. The final score came late in the game on a 21-yard pass from Vrable to Banks to make the final 45-17. Mount Union almost doubled up Marietta's time of possession and converted 11 of 15 third down conversions. It was a solid performance. Jorris and Micheli combined to complete seven of 15 passes for 84 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Garcon led all receives with four catches covering 56 yards. Defensively, Joseph Millings led the team with five tackles. Tony DeRiggi and Nick Parr combined for a sack and Anthony Ursetti added an interception to go along with DeRiggi's. Each team committed two turnovers and the Purple & White finished the regular season +16 in that category. With the win, the Raiders finish the regular season 10-0 overall and 9-0 in conference play winning the Ohio Athletic Conference football championship outright. It is Mount Union's 13th perfect regular season finish in the last 15 years.. The Raiders automatically qualify for the NCAA Division III playoffs by virtue of winning the OAC and will host Hope in a first round meeting at Mount Union Stadium Saturday with kickoff set for 12:00 noon. The Flying Dutchmen enter the contest 7-3 and qualified for the playoffs as champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. It will be the first ever meeting on the gridiron between these two schools.
