Last week Mount Union scored first when it took the opening kickoff and marched right down the field on the way to a 17-0 first quarter lead over Capital. This week the Raiders again scored first on the way to a 14-0 first quarter advantage. But it was the defense that came up with the big play, as Mark Petruziello's first pass was intercepted by Matt Kostelnik and returned 29 yards for a touchdown just over a minute into the game. It was Kostelnik's fourth defensive touchdown this season. Nate Kmic
notched the second score, from one-yard out, capping a four-play, 51 yard
drive that began near midfield following a Blue Streak punt. Mount Union and John Carroll brought the OAC's two best defensives into the game and in the first half especially, had the upper hand. Each team's offense scored just once. The Blue Streaks blanked the Purple & White out in the second stanza, while cutting the lead in half when Petruziello hit Tim Cohn from 17 yards out, capping an eight-play, 69-yard drive. Mount Union immediately drove to John Carroll's 13 following the touchdown but four straight incomplete passes from Mike Jorris ended the threat. The 14-7 halftime score marked the closest an opponent has been to the Purple Raiders at the intermission all season. At the break,
Mount Union had an advantage in total yards 163 to 112, but John Carroll had
more rushing yards, 33 to just 25 for the Purple Raiders. The only third quarter scoring came via the foot of Mike Zimmerman, who booted a 17-yard field goal. It actually was a moral victory for John Carroll, which stopped Mount Union at the one-yard line. The score capped a 13-play, 89-yard march, and may have been the drive of the game. It gave the Purple Raiders some breathing room with a 17-7 lead through three quarters. Kmic scored twice in the fourth period, sandwiched around a Petruziello to Joseph Konrad 10-yard touchdown pass. Kmic's scores came on runs of two and 27 yards. The sophomore running back leads Mount Union in scoring with 19 total touchdowns. Jorris and Greg
Micheli combined to complete 19 of 33 passes for 213 yards and one
interception. Each team committed one turnover so Mount Union remains
+16 in turnover margin for the season. Kmic was held to 79 yards rushing on 19 carries while Micheli managed 77 yards on nine rushing attempts to lead the ground game. Pierre Garcon had five receptions for 96 yards while Brandon Boehm recorded five catches for 44 yards. Defensively, the Raiders were led by Matt Rees' seven tackles and two sacks. Pat McCullough, Justin Stickley and Sam Vucelich also each recorded sacks while Nick Barren and Kostelnik shared one. Mount Union had six sacks in the game but did not give up one and now have 37 on the year while allowing only eight. The Purple & White finished with 393 total yards while the Blue & Gold managed 222. Despite being outgained on the ground at the half, Mount Union finished with 180 rushing yards to 56 for the Blue Streaks.
The Raiders improve to 9-0 on the season and 8-0 in conference play. Next week a trip to Marietta awaits as Mount Union will try to finish off a perfect regular season. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. from Don Drumm Stadium. The Pioneers enter the contest 6-3 overall and 5-3 in the OAC. Last year Mount Union beat Marietta 59-7, and have won 26 straight in the series dating back to the Pioneers last victory in 1977. Overall, the Purple Raiders own a 35-8-1 lead in the series.
