Call it whatever you like, a regional final or a national quarterfinal, but just make sure you call it a classic battle between two very, very good Ohio Athletic Conference football teams in the third round of the NCAA Division III playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Mount Union scored 10 fourth quarter points to break open a 7-7 tie and defeat Capital 17-14 in front of 2,817 fans at Mount Union Stadium Saturday, advancing to the national semifinals for the 12th straight season.
The Purple Raiders are a Division III best 50-9 in playoff games and 6-0 when facing an OAC opponent during the playoffs. Here's the breakdown:

With the score tied at seven midway through the third quarter on Saturday, Mount Union marched 59 yards in 10 plays, all but one of the plays on the ground. Nate Kmic had eight carries on the drive, including the last six, accounting for 35 of the 59 yards..
On fourth and goal from the one with just over a minute remaining in the period, Kmic tried to leap the pile into the endzone. But Kyle Hausler met him in midair and James Starks finished the play for no gain and the game remained tied at seven.
Part of Larry Kehres' thinking in going for the touchdown had to be that if it were unsuccessful, Capital would have the ball on its own one-yard line in a tie game and a minute away from having to travel into the wind.
Kehres' defense rose to the challenge, forcing a three and out and as the fourth quarter began the Crusaders found themselves punting from the back of their own endzone. Shawn Stencil's 29-yard punt was returned 10 yards by Justin Wray and the Raiders were set up in great field position at the Capital 20.

The 20-yard field goal broke a tie which had held since early in the second stanza. Mount Union got on the board first with 2:31 remaining in the initial quarter on an eight-yard run Greg Micheli, capping a 10-play, 54-yard drive. Mount Union dominated the first quarter, running three times as many plays as Capital, and leading in total yards 115 to 12 and in first downs six to none.
But Capital managed to tie the game 12 minutes before halftime on a 10-yard pass from Rocky Pentello to Mike Niedzwiecki, completing a seven-play, 61-yard drive. By the time intermission rolled around the Crusaders had evened up the stats, amassing 133 yards on 29 plays to the Raiders 145 yards on 30 plays. Each team had seven first downs.
The only thing similar to this game and last year's playoff battle was the margin of victory. There were six lead changes in the 2005 national quarterfinal and neither team led by more than one score in the entire contest. It was tied 17-17 at halftime and 24-24 after three periods before the Purple & White won the fourth quarter 10-7 to pull out the 34-31 victory.
That game was full of big plays by each team's offense. This one was won by
the respective defenses.
That strategy worked as the Raiders kept control of the ball for over 38 minutes. When the game was over they had run 73 plays to the Crusaders 49 and accumulated nearly 100 yards more of offense.
Following the field goal making it 10-7, Mount Union's defense forced three incomplete passes by Pentello and Capital had to punt again.
The Raiders again kept it on the ground, moving 60 yards in eight plays, most of it this time by Micheli, who carried six times, including the final one-yard for a 17-7 advantage.
The Crusaders responded with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Pentello to Derrick Alexander a minute and a half later but were unable to stop the Mount running game over the final five minutes.
Following the kickoff, the Raiders kept the ball on the ground and ran 4:45 off the clock with an 11-play, 45-yard march, picking
up three first downs along the way. By the time Capital got the ball
back, on its own 21, only 14 seconds remained.
The Purple & White attempted just three passes in the second half, completing all three for 12 yards. Mike Jorris and Micheli combined to complete five of nine passes in the game for 28 yards and one interception, which came by Jorris early in the contest. Pentello completed 20 of 36 passes for 255 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions and was sacked four times in his final game. Mount Union quarterbacks were not sacked.
Kmic lead all rushers with 169 yards on 38 attempts, while Micheli carried it 24 times for a career high 116 yards. Garcon had four catches covering 22 yards and Wray had the other reception for six yards.
For Capital, Charlie Smith had seven rushes for 10 yards. Alexander led all receivers with eight catches for 129 yards while Niedzwiecki had five grabs for 57 yards.
Defensively, Daryl Ely led the way with six tackles, while Matt Kostlenik, Sam Vucelich and Jonah Wilson each had five. Justen Stickley recorded two sacks with Tony DeRiggi and Vucelich getting one. Kostelnik and Vucelich each had interceptions.
Mount Union finished with 330 yards, 302 on the ground and 28 through the
air. Capital gained 234 total yards, 255 through the air and -21 on
the ground. The Raiders converted six of 15 third down opportunities
With the win, Mount Union will host St. John Fisher next week in semifinal playoff action. It is the 12th straight year the Purple Raiders advance to the semifinal round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
The Cardinals are making their first appearance in the semifinals and will enter the contest with a 12-1 record while Mount Union is 13-0. Kickoff from Mount Union Stadium on Saturday is set for 12:00 noon. The winner advances to play in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl the following week against the winner of the Wesley at Wis-Whitewater game.
